Last night, I witnessed an absolute clown fiesta of a thread in AITA. I'm not gonna link because of brigading, but I'll give you guys a concise summary. AITA is a subreddit where people post a story and the comments give OP a judgement. So here's the story summary. A guy goes to dinner at his friends house and the conversation goes to dating. This is the dialogue between OP and his friends sister:

Her: I tell all my friends to never date a man who splits the bill. Men who split the bill aren't worth it. They don't put in effort and they're not romantic.

OP: I usually splits the bill.

Her: Well I'm not dating you so whatever.

OP: Its 2021 not 1950 and avoiding guys who prefer to split is cutting some potential great guys off.

Her: Men who use women’s rights as an excuse to not put effort in a relationship are lame. Guys who insist on splitting everything 50/50 are going to end up being shitty boyfriends, shitty husbands and shitty fathers.

OP: Ok, well you're basically a gold digger who wants a sugar daddy.

Her: You're a sexist asshole. I probably make more money than you do anyway.

She then told her brother to never invite OP over again and left the room. OP says to his friend "your sister is a bitch" and his friend replies "youre cheap and you shouldnt call her names."

Thats how the story ends. On AITA, the comments are supposed to judge who was an asshole. When judging, you can say that 1 specific person was an asshole, or that both people were assholes, or that nobody was an asshole. The point is to determine who was an asshole and who wasnt.

Its pretty clear that she was being an asshole. As for OP, thats up for debate. He did say some mean things, but it was in response to her repeatedly saying rude and sexist things. And OP didnt say mean things until she made it personal (after OP specified that he prefers to split the bill, she said "men who split the bill are shitty boyfriends/husbands/fathers" etc).

So, the comment responses should be a mix of "you were both assholes" and "she was the only asshole", right?

Wrong. Almost every comment said that OP was a huge asshole and the sister wasn't an asshole. They sugarcoated her behavior as "shes just telling you her dating preferences" and they exaggerated about how bad OPs behavior was. Going so far as to straight up lie and say "hes the one who started the name calling", "he was the one talking down to her from the start", etc.

Keep in mind, one of the rulings that people commonly give are "you were both assholes." But people didnt give this ruling. They specifically said that the woman wasn't being an asshole. There were a few comments that said "OP isnt the asshole, she is" and they all got heavily downvoted. There were some comments that said "youre both assholes" and they were slightly downvoted.

Heres my favorite part. A few of the comments talked about gender roles and patriarchy, and how the woman was reinforcing gender roles and OP was fighting gender roles. What happened to those comments? They got heavily downvoted and people responded to them, trying to justify why it wasn't gender roles. To say that they were doing "mental gymnastics" is an understatement.

Apparently, redditors love patriarchal gender roles, so long as its a woman advocating for male gender roles.
