This is a tough industry to scrutinize at a macro level (annual pay) for pay equality though, especially based soley on what this article reports.

Everyone working as a model (male or female) has different hourly/daily rates based on how in-demand they are, plus some modeling gigs will pay more than others, they all work different agencies, and there's also the matter of how many gigs you work in a year factoring into your overall take-home pay. It's not reported how many hours each model mentioned in the article actually worked during the year. I have no data to back this up, but it would not surprise me if there were more gigs to go around for female models in the first place... So many ads are targeted to women and there are more fashion retailers selling women's clothing than men's.

Additionally, as models for ad campaigns if you are extremely well known you're not really being paid to "model" the product... you're being paid to endorse it. And the article does point out part of the reason Cara Delevingne can charge such a huge rate over the others is her 40 million social media followers... I've personally never heard of David Gandy, the male model who made the top ten and they don't say how many followers he has. In an industry where you don't have to use your brain, things like followers are the qualifications you bring to the table rather than years of experience and education.

While on one hand, posing for a camera is the same work no matter who does it, if you're given a gig because you were specifically sought after, well no one else can do the same work as "being you" in front of a camera. I would not be surprised that if an A-list male celeb (let's say Brad Pitt) takes an endorsement gig for a product that his rate for a gig would be more aligned with some of the top earners mentioned in this article, if not more.

Now, if a single ad campaign featured a mix of male and female models all with similar follower counts, working similar hours, and it came out that the females were making more, then that would be a concrete example of unequal pay for the very same gig.

To be honest, I don't mind this. It's similar to how mens sporting teams earn way more than women's. It's because they are in far higher demand and are much more popular. Same thing here, female models are in much higher demand and so they are getting the higher wages.

In general working jobs this would be terrible, but in a job like modelling it kinda makes sense.

See this folks, this is the real wage gap. The popular wage gap thing was already debunked many times, but let me say something about it again.

At many offices, a lot of men tend to work overtime. So yes, they are paid more for their work. Some women work overtime too, and they are paid the same amount. But why would any company pay those who work for a lesser time, just because of their gender? If they want to be paid more, they can work more.

But here, the unpopular real wage gap appears. Male models and female models do the same work, but still on an average a male model is paid only half of what a female model is paid. Those who claim to talk about equality have to talk about this.

Seems fine to me. Its offer and demand and not a sexism ploy. Theres a lot more interest for women models than men. Its like how men earn more in sports than women because of the interest.
