In those pre civ, tribal hunter-gatherer days, women we're most likely having sex with most of the men in their tribes... There is nothing that points to some sort of alpha male harem or the leader getting the women and everyone else fighting for the leftovers situation.

Concealed ovulation leads to confused paternity which leads to every dude who had sex with a woman thinking it could be their child and supporting them both as such. This is how our populations grew so fast, remained so close knit, and probably how tribes combined as well.

Alpha male caveman shit is just a power fantasy...

Back in caveman days females literally just had trains run on them fairly frequently and part of the purpose of females making noise during intercourse is to attract more males to join in OR to call potentially better males to come along and drive off/unlife the current partner and replace them.

So, I’ll throw out my pet theory that I’ve mentioned in a few posts here.

As you see discussed a lot in red pill circles, people tend to view sexual selection in humans as a type of “males compete, females choose” (MCFC) structure. Red pill people are correct that this idea actually does dominate a good bit of the scientific literature, but recent thinking has really challenged this view and pushed toward a structure of mutual mate choice (MMC) in humans. The linked article will talk about this in a lot more depth that I can cover in a Reddit post, but we have pretty good reason to think that men are exerting a selective pressure on female traits in LTRs.

That said, my speculation is this is primarily driven by socially enforced monogamy and assortive mating. The male choosiness seen in humans is predominantly a result of men being able to only select one “best” option. Were the entirety of the dating market to shift toward polygyny, we would see more MCFC and the variation in male reproductive success would increase. This often occurs in our nearest primate relatives and there’s decent evidence it occurred in more primitive humans.

The thing is, modern hookup culture and STRs violate this structure. Women can more effectively “share” a single man, meaning men therefore need to optimize their “mating” choices less efficiently; they can have their both their best option and a less optimal mating choice. Therefore, while talking about the entirety of the dating market as MCFC is wrong, red pilled arguments proposing MCFC specifically in the context of STRs is more reasonable.
