Whenever sensationalist statiscts like this come up, i always suspect something fishy is going on. So, 12% of men reporting "feeling desired as much as they want", while 88% wanted to "feel desired more". Okay, why wasn't there an item asking for men who "feel little desired" or "don't feel desired at all"? To put it into perspective, if you ask people their level of satisfaction with money, most would probably say they'd like more, despite not living under poverty line. I can already feel incel propaganda abusing the shit out of this study. Will also read the actual paper later too.

I can already feel incel propaganda abusing the shit out of this study.

"88% of straight men in the United States are beta males."

Excellent point. There is actually a name for this bias called psychological priming or chuting or something.

Yeah, I think that there's this notion that men shouldn't need to feel desired, but be the ones that desire others. We joke about it, but everyone seems to think that we should feel grateful that someone wants to sleep with us at all and asking for more is somehow unmanly.

It's dumb and and leads to so many men having shitty sex lives.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I concur, but not sure what the solution is. Begging for more doesn’t work and is cringey. On average women have lower desire than men, so it’s not surprising

Here's something that I fully believe in: being the initiator trains you to look for things you find attractive about your partner. It trains you to not to just wait for the attraction to come. Instead, you begin to look for the opportunity to find your partner attractive.

One common mistake that people do, is to conflate being active with being dominant, so people feel uncomfortable trying to do it.

My point with all of this, is to say that men shouldn't beg, but look for good partners that put some effort into being good partners.

Doomerism won't do anything for us.

I sort of get what you are saying though I might be missing your core message.

Counter point: Apart from the fact that the man being the initiator gets old really fast, there is also the issue of "enthusiastic consent" which seems to be the gold standard in progressive subs. If the man is initiating, even if it is successful how can he know if the woman is really into him or just going along with it to placate him? If the woman is initiating, then there is a slightly higher confidence that she wants it, though even that is not guaranteed. If that's doomerism, then it's what it is.

I am definitely NOT anti porn but I think a lot of this has to do with unrealistic expectations set by both porn and mainstream movies.

I think those of us who have had numerous relationships have had at least one that was really hot right at the beginning where the sex was just constant.

It’s not a realistic expectation to think that will go on forever, but apparently that’s what many people expect.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, movies definitely ruin it with fairy tale expectations

[–]heytheredelilah91 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You are correct. And if you weren't, subreddits like r/deadbedrooms wouldn't exist.

[+]EHL_sask 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's what happens when you lean too much on money to build a marraige.

[–]heytheredelilah91 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think too many people enter marriage with wrong/unrealistic, or mismatched expectations. Money, kids, sex, or anything else you can think of.

[–]OhwellBish 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I think part of the issue is that men are not socialized or encouraged to talk about their feelings especially when there is the potential for their egos to be bruised. I believe that some of these men who don't feel desired might find out that they are actually far more desired than they think, but there are other issues impeding their sex life or desire that have nothing to do with the man at all (e.g. fatigue, hormonal issues from birth control, etc.)

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal[S] 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I admit that's probably a big factor. It's harder for women to have energy to feel desire after doing a disproportionate amount of physical, mental and emotional labor in the household and at work. Patriarchy is to blame for this. But I don't think that's the whole story. Even if labor sharing was equal, women would still have a lower desire level.

Edit: I am not blaming women at all. I only wish there was willingness to be honest about this instead of insisting that sexually women are no different from men and if only men would clean up their act everything would be peachy. It won't.

[–]OhwellBish 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree. I think that sexual relations are not something that we are very mindful and deliberate about in general. There seems to be very little said about the middle ground between burning with passion and being totally indifferent or repulsed. My husband is my fantasy man in general, but day to day, the passion ebbs and flows. When I was pregnant, I was very sick the entire time, and my sex drive went straight to hell. As understanding as my husband was, that took its toll. I wonder if the often implied transactional nature of sex contributes to this problem as well. If sex is a carrot or a stick, it loses that natural element of passion and intimacy.

Look around most dudes are not desirable dudes

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

OK, may be that's true. I can't know for sure what constitutes 'desirable' for women since I'm a straight male. But then why are women marrying these 'not desirable' dudes? Are they settling?

[–]rulesforrebels 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Article won't open for me does it state spouses or just partners? In terms of desirable its not necessarily about jawline or height its basic stuff like are you not a slob do you take care of your body and basic hygiene.

[–]PutsWomenOnPedestal[S] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not sure why the article doesn't open for you. I think it's spouses. I will see if I can find the study later.
