There's nothing wrong with it because both partners are aware of what the deal is before they get married.

That said, seeing as conventional, one-size fits all marriage seems to be dying, perhaps it is time to get rid of all spousal support. Instead, move to negotiated contracts tailor-made for each marriage. Contracts that can be updated if say conditions change. For example, if the couple is contemplating kids and the woman is going to stay home, then she insists on a new contract that protects her better before she quits work, etc.

Basically, people are now living together and partnering up in a million different and idiosyncratic ways, so maybe we need to get rid of the marriage = one-size fits all contract.

That’s why women should be encouraged to be independent, have their own resources and never build a man up at their own expense.

Never contribute to the success of a man or make large sacrifices for a partner who might erase your contributions out of the equation when paths part. Not moving for a man, fore-going job/networking opportunities - each partner should be looking out largely for themselves so that no one is regarded as “stealing” from the other down the line.

Because there's a legal point to being married. That's why the government is involved.

A married couple is more or less an entity. They share. Society sees them this way too. That's the point.

If you don't want to share, don't get married. You can love someone just as much, I suppose.

No one is getting a reward for not being married anymore, it's a matter of equal shares of what belonged to the married couple.

It doesn't matter how YOU feel about the fairness of the workload or even the nature of it. That's how that couple lived and there's no complaining afterward.

Usually the reason given is that they are accustomed to a certain standard of living. But didn't they forgo that standard when they filed for divorce? Or if they were not the one to file, why did they put all their eggs in one basket and assume they would be with that one person forever?

"Accustomed to" isn't the reason for sharing. It's the reason for the amount of alimony awarded, factored in with some other things if necessary. This is so a very high income couple isn't allowed a divorce where one partner gives a fraction of what the family was used to living on, saying "oh that's enough for YOU to live on now".

And no, they don't forgo that standard while trying to make up for what they lost in employability or while having full custody of the couple's kids. Why should they? They were a married couple.

Who knows why anyone believes it will last? Why do you think they should be penalized for it? They WERE still married.

You combine incomes when you get married. The other spouse deserves to live the same lifestyle as when you were married. Even if you part ways they’re still entitled to that lifestyle. It’s the same way with child support. Your child should be living the same lifestyle as you. It’s not stealing.

I noticed you highlighted “ex-wife” when there’s a lot of women paying spousal support now that there’s so many women making more than their spouse. Women pay spousal support too in 2022.

I assume you mean alimony and not child support.

I can see two examples where it’s fair: when the spouse is sick or disabled and unable to work, and a military spouse who spend years sacrificing for the spouse’s career. And interestingly
