On the one hand, I think the author of this article makes a lot of insightful points—talking about the fact that boys are often treated worse than girls in ways you wouldn’t expect from the traditional gender narrative, that you don’t automatically get “male privilege” for being male, etc.

On the other hand, it really feels like he’s still trying to insist that men or maleness are the problem, that even though by his own admission being male doesn’t entitle you to “male” privilege and being female doesn’t preclude you from receiving it, it’s still totally a male thing that men do, because, you know, it’s bad.

The author also views all of this through the lens of transness to a rather baffling degree—implying that men who aren’t assertive are seen by society as pseudo-trans, and that their lack of privilege is therefore due to their transness, because of course the idea that cis people are kind of trans is a better explanation for why male privilege is so hit-or-miss than…I don’t know, the possibility that assertiveness is what’s valued and gender is only loosely related to that?

Overall, I found this article fascinating as a dissent to prevailing gender narrative, the moreso because it tries so hard to insist on the essential correctness of that narrative while blasting it full of holes.

You kind of have to walk this line in some circles if you don't want to get called an "alt-right incel" and have your thoughts completely discredited.

Indeed, and is yet another piece of evidence that in the West, the feminists hold status quo incumbency in many Institutions of power (colleges, MSM, big Tech and social media, certain political parties, entertainment industry, etc)

Once you start seeing the world through the "patriarchy" lens, that's all you can see.

[–]oggyb 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nicely put.

There's an uncomfortable sense of cognitive dissonance in the piece!

[–]BloomingBrains 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm willing to get on board with the idea that society doesn't see hyper dominant/assertive/aggressive men as "real men" and judges them negatively for it. But the author doesn't say that. Phrasing it that way, saying that society puts pressure on men to be a "real man" would be like admitting there are unfair pressures to men, which their ideology obviously doesn't want to admit because it states we're supposed to have all the privilege.

I've also noticed this weird trend where some transactivists/transtrenders seem to really want to believe that more people are secretly trans. I've even seen tumblr/twitter posts to the tune of "are cis people really cis? They haven't actually thought about their gender like we have...". Double this fetish when it comes to femboys or crossdressers. Plenty of people want everything to be about LGBT to the point where they can't even imagine that a boy could want to be pretty but still feel that he is a boy. I don't know why its so hard for some people to just be trans without having the make everyone else trans too.

And the sad truth is that these examples help justify the worst variety of conservatives because it gives them something to point to when their conspiracy theories about "the government wanting to turn men into women" are questioned.

I think this is a minority, but I've also seen it. Occasionally posts from r/egg_irl pop up in r/all, and some of the memes are...a little strange. I've seen quite a few that follow the format of "Character complains about certain aspects of their gender they find frustrating or consider disadvantageous--punchline is that this obviously means they're trans in denial, since cis people cannot experience dissatisfaction with traditional gender roles???"

that's not what this author is doing, of course. The implication in the article is that society sees non-masculine men as trans, not that they see themselves that way. Which...is more plausible, I suppose, but I think it's at best a retroactive re-conceptualization of a very old problem.

The problems caused by female socialization usually come from female peers. I grew up perceived as female, and it wasn't the boys who forced me to put on a "people pleaser" mask because anything less than conformity meant social suicide. It was the girls who made the unwritten rules on who was a worthy person to be around; if I liked something they didn't care about they'd either walk away as soon as I mentioned it or they'd pretend to like it all while giggling to their friends about how bad I was at fitting in.

When boys are cruel to each other, feminists call this "toxic masculinity." When girls are cruel to each other, feminists call this "internalized misogyny." They'd rather blame men instead of examining how society as a whole treats nonconformity in general.

Women are often gatekeepers for male social approval as well.

This is what soft power is about.

That's why being a virgin (or "incel") is such a big deal. Being able to get women to like you and have sex with you is a big part of how society views you as a person.

I think most men would probably say that they feel more pressure from women to act and behave in certain ways than by other men.

There's even research now showing that gender norms are more strongly enforced by women than by men.

I'm not sure why that's the case but it's definitely something that most of society is blind to.

Yes, that is true but it's not like there's no pressure from men. Don't behave like girls or don't be pussy these kind of pressure you will get from men and regarding masculine pressure like 'Real men act/behave/talk this way ' these kind of pressure you will get from women and there are some inner fear which men have like pressure to perform during sex, pressure to please women during sex, pressure to say yes to women's each advances, pressure to prove that I am man, pressure to take the charge or initiation during dating and treat women, fear to tell your women about your sexuality, sexual problems etc.

I don't know who is pressurising more to men but yes the whole society have more toxic expectations from men.

[–]Jaded_Japan[S] 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for your perspective. In my (cis male) experience, most of the pressure to perform masculinity in a way that was toxic to myself or others came from women in my life, not men.

[–]not-on-my-watchy 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well articulated. You have a unique view and experience that people need to hear.

[–]oggyb 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Two interesting comments the author made that I think are rather perceptive. It's a shame authors like them never follow through with the logic of these arguments.

There is no single feminine mold that all women need to break free of equally. There is no masculine ideal that cuts across every single culture, class bracket, or moment in time.

and

To focus on the harm of “girlhood” or being “socialized female” is to completely miss the real problem for me, a problem that will remain as long as we keep forcing genders onto babies without their consent.

[–]KochiraJin 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not that perceptive. I have heard the idea that there are commonalities in masculinity that cut across those lines. Specifically provision, protection and procreation. Protection being the big one while the other two are shared to varying degrees. It wouldn't surprise me if you could fins a similar set of traits for femininity.

The second point assumes that men and women are identical and it's only the social aspects that differ. That's not a safe assumption to make given that we know humans are sexually dimorphic. Socialization certainly is a big part of human development but it's very likely that biological differences play a roll too.

[–]oggyb 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for the rebuttal. In the second quote I was implying the argument about not forcing things on babies is a hair's breadth from being intactivism. I should have made that clearer.

[–]Banake 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks, this was interesting.
