What I think happened is that although you are valued in your job, he needed the company to reduce expenses, your salary in particular, to make some financial goal for the company or to keep from having to lower his own income. -- Simple as that.

Yes, he fucked up big time with firing you.
Do NOT look back. The compromise you offered is not acceptable to him anyway; he will still have the problem of too much expense for his company.

The best course of action would have been to accept the demotion with grace and then find a new job and give notice.

Going back crawling now with your tail between your legs is useless. You're done.

Chalk it up, learn from it and move on.

Bottom line, never lose your composure at work. Always maintain frame. Do what you have to so that you can keep paychecks coming in. Make profound decisions (such as employment) on your terms. When you get a boss who fucks you for his/her personal shit instead of doing what's best for the company - just bide your time. Either transfer out of his/her department or find a better job and resign.

How was your relationship with the Boss? Did you do anything that could have been a fire-able offense? If you made him look bad, you can pretty much count yourself unemployed. It seems that in the moment you made a decision to make him look bad and now at home having thought about things and being unemployed you regret burning the bridge. edit: It might be possible to get your job back if he has a senior and you can prove to them that you are worth your weight. Just unlikely that your previous boss will set his ego aside unless forced to by a superior.

No. It is, in all likelihood, not a test. And by that I mean it's like 99.999% not a test. I'm a bit concened about the things you said. And I mean this with all due respect but I have a condition called BiPolar Disorder and I need to run something by you.

There is something called hypomania and then something called mania. These are the "highs" people speak on when they talk about bipolar. I was hypomanic at a job and I started feeling like i was just KILLING it. And by all reports and reviews I was doing a great job. But that made me OVER think that I was REALLY KILLING IT. I started to think that "they" (the big bosses; CAO) were going to see me as the best thing in the department (IT) and fire the director and replace him with me. The director had a pretty bad track record with employees. He liked to break people. Probably once every couple months an employee would break down crying at their desk. And it was this that made me think that finally the company had found someone that was capable enough to replace him, ie: me.

I got fired. For a week after that (maybe longer because I was manic and time gets a bit warped) I believed it was a test. I thought they just needed to get me out of the way to clean house (fire the boss) and then being me back. I thought they were going to call me back and have a reception/party where all the big bosses and other co workers were going to congratulate me on a job well done.

This was a type of delusion called Pronoia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronoia_(psychology) it's the exact opposite of paranoia (where you think people are out to get you). I believed that everyone (except the boss) was trying to help me. But actually, I even thought that maybe the boss was trying to act as a mentor and push me to see how great I could become so I even thought HE was on my side in a way.

You may have a crazy/bully/sociopath boss, but he's not testing you. And even though you may have made a fine exit, within 2 minutes of you walking out, your co-workers were already back to work like nothing happend and within a couple days you are already becoming a distant memory because everyone pretty much hates work and they don't even want to stick their neck out for themselves, nevermind a co worker. This doesn't mean that they don't or never liked you, it's just reality man. Everyone is putting in time and it's dog-eat-dog and every man for himself.

Now, I could be wrong here. I hope I am. I'm not a shrink and even a shrink wouldn't be able to diagnose you from a post. But thinking it's a test, thinking you nailed it, thinking they are going to call you back, thinking that other bosses are somehow going to stick up for you and or give the other boss shit (even if they asked him WHY, whatever he says is going to be believed because he's the boss) seem a bit delusional and grandiose. I mean no offense. But the old saying "it takes one to know one" applies here. I can hear myself saying the exact same things so I had to say something.

All I ask is that you take this with a grain of salt but at least consider it. Heck maybe you were killing it. Maybe the boss was intimidated. But at the end, you did get fired and firing someone is not a "test". Can you imagine the lawsuit you could file if they called you back and were like "we made a mistake, you were killing it and blah blah blah.... " sure, maybe you'd go back and feel validated. But Can you imagine if you went the other way and said "WHAT!? Do you have any idea the psychological and financial stress you put me though all for a test? I'll see you in court!" You'd win a HUGE lawsuit. So no, it's not a test. Believe me, it's not a test.

Similar happened to me before, not a new job but new responsibilities that were a step backwards in terms of the skills needed.

I think it's best to think in terms of your own goals. That's what the boss is doing; he likely wasn't trying to demote you per se; he just needed help over in cs. Needs change from time to time and won't ever fit neatly into his available personnel.

Working in a team, everyone is just a tool to his supervisor. If a hammer is needed as a doorstop, we just use it as a doorstop. If the hammer refuses and there are no nails to hammer for now, it may be switched out for a doorstop.

TL;DR: agree with the advice to take the demotion and look for another job in the meantime.

You're not getting that job back. The worst thing that a manager can do is show weakness by hiring back someone he fired. This shows a lack of integrity.

No, hes not going to change his mind and ask you back. Your done there. Apparently your not as valuable as you seem to think you are. This isn't a shit test, its a "were cutting expenses and we don't need you" situation. I understand that your probably mad and frustrated, but you need to check your ego and look at the situation rationally.

You did not make the mistake in that moment- only in failing to show your loyalty to your boss while excelling at your job.

Your boss felt threatened, and used his power to throw you off while he was still on top of you.
