Malta adopted a strange and undemocratic mechanism as from the last elections so that if less than 40% of elected candidates were women a mechanism kicked in so that 16 women would be 'elected' to parliament without having obtained the necessary democratic votes.

Now, the EU, which is typically pro feminism, has seen this as a step too far and is urging Malta to 'revisit' its 'gender equalisation mechanism'.
