I consulted a different attorney today to get a second opinion on my case. My current lawyer has not been as responsive as I’d like, and his specialty is not family law. There’s also some internal drama with his firm restructuring.

I received advice from this new attorney (partner who only does family law) that asset division happens with the balance at filing date, and DOES NOT account for what the balances were prior to the date of marriage. This is extremely relevant for me given the length of my marriage is just over a year, and the majority of my assets were accumulated prior to marriage.

Not sure if I’m going to get great advice here, but I needed to get a sanity check. My state is Indiana.
