I (female) feel somewhat resentful at the excessive amount of advertising towards women’s fashion, skincare, make-up, etc., manipulating women into thinking we should spend a incredible amount of time thinking about it / feel “empowered” or better able to express our creativity through it / remain lifelong youthful child-women. The preponderance of advertising and opportunities for consumerism - just going to the mall, there’s about 10 female fashion stores for every 1 male fashion store - suggests it should take up an important place.

Society’s cool with an 18-year-old boy wearing jeans and a grey t-shirt every day, and instead focussing on the things that truly give meaning to life - intellectual/creative fulfilment. An 18-year-old girl can technically do the same, but she’s also inundated with advertisements suggesting she should focus on her appearance and endlessly analyse emotions.

Not slamming fashion - I do enjoy it - but I wonder how much I’d care if it weren’t a societal norm. It’d probably be way closer to what my boyfriend thinks - get something decent and call it a day, with no need to fret about growing older/getting the latest fashions/having perfect skin. Or if I’m upset, maybe it’s because I don’t have fulfilling work - it’s not some aberrant emotion that must be journaled/Himalayan rock lamped/bubble bathed/colouring booked away. All this bullshit directed to women, in my view.

It all seems terribly sexist, but to have a balanced view, and perhaps quell some of the resentment - is there similar insidious marketing to men that I might not be aware of? Genuinely asking. Maybe pressure to be buff/physically fit..?
