The full report from the CDC is more interesting than the NBC summary, although obviously you'll still have to read between the lines.

The full report from the CDC is more interesting than the NBC summary

The one that stands out to me is there is decrease in amount of teens ever having sex (47% in 2011 vs 30% in 2021) and a decrease in the amount of teens using condoms (60% in 2011 vs 51% in 2021). Now it could be that these teens are waiting until they get older which is good I guess, but seeing as there has been a steady decline in the amount of college students having sex and just people having less sex overall I think it's more likely that there is less socialization going on which mean less human pairings happening. Then with the decrease in condom use could also just mean that the less responsible teens are the ones having sex.

Another interesting one are all the suicide statics. In by the all the given metrics Seriously Considered Attempting Suicide, Made a Suicide Plan, Attempted Suicide, Injured in a Suicide Attempt. There has been an increase in all these for girls but the guys have all remained the same with maybe a 1-2% increase. Interestingly enough there isn't a stat on successful suicide attempts.

[–]i12farQ 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You’re forgetting that although the guys suicide statistics have stayed the same, they’re much higher regardless of the 1 or 2% increase of female suicide rates.

[–]denyjunctionfunction 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Including the successful suicides wouldn’t fit the agenda.

[–]motogek 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's my impression too.

Marijuana use: 18% of girls vs 14% in of boys (20% g/26% m in 2011). Alcohol use: 27% of girls vs 19% of boys (38% g/39% b in 2011). Sexually active: 23g/19b in 2021, 33g/34b in 2021.

How much of that is because teenagers are more abstemious, and how much is because they're not going out as much, and when they do go out it's more structured and supervised, with less opportunity to make connections beyond their own immediate friends.

I cannot undetstand why parents allow kids on social media.

[–]Ferbuggity 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As a parent of a parent, I'm telling my kid not to allow her son unfettered soc media access, but I'm pretty sure she's worked that out herself. It's unbelievably toxic, and way too much for children's emotional and mental wellbeing.

If one looks at objective data such as grades, graduation rates and test scores about how boys and girls were doing in the 1970s, one sees they were similar, so feminists designed a survey eliciting emotional responses that they were able to twist to claim there was an educational crisis impacting girls. When the biased 1:4 college women are raped “statistic” came out, actual reporting data put the number at about 6 per 1,000 being sexually assaulted. I could easily design a survey asking about being hit, shoved, pushed, etc and report that nearly all men are victims of battery but don’t report it. Perceptions from self reported survey information and more objective reporting of defined actions can yield incredibly different results.

I think this may be much the same. There’s hard data about boys vs girls being assaulted. There’s hard data about male vs female suicide rates. Schools have to log reports of bullying. Yet this report mostly glosses over such hard data in favor of self reported perceptions and I know there are studies showing males and females have different perceptions regarding threats and risk. For example:

Mom: “learning to ride a bike is dangerous, my child will likely fall and skin their knee.”

Father: “learning to ride a bike is fairly safe. The worst that’s likely to happen is the kid falling and skinning their knee which is no big deal. “

A boy and girl may experience the same negativity online and one may call it bullying and one may not label it so. That’s a matter of perception, more than a measure of incidence. This report isn’t coming up with an objective definition of bullying and trying to objectively measure the incident rate at which that occurs. There are studies where researchers actually go online and try to measure bullying according to certain criteria, but again, this report fails to address that kind of study. Perceptions or thoughts often don’t reflect action. This report mentions girls think about suicide more, but having a thought about something doesn’t mean much. The fact is males commit suicide more, which is a much more meaningful statistic than a thought.

This report is primarily self reported information about perceptions and there may be some value in that information, but that’s not the same as objectively measuring the rates of a defined action.

I think this is a growing issue. We are seeing more and more articles presenting issues based on self reported survey information and fewer based on objective reporting of incidents.

Worth reading Christina Hoff Sommers on that subject.

Would you remember if that "sexually assaulted" number included actual rape?

Well, they're not wrong. I mean, they are in laying the blame at the feet of the "rape crisis" that Biden and his boys Gulf-of-Tonkined into existence, instead of the complex web of factors making life genuinely miserable for young people (and non-young people, for that matter) these days, but I have no difficulty believing that teen girls are pretty damned unhappy.

How does advocating for women’s issues somehow invalidate men’s issues? I’m aware I’ll be downvoted for this but just because people are saying women are struggling doesn’t mean they are implying that men aren’t

[–]denisc9918 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't unless you try taking away mens rights to 'fix' it but focusing on only female issues does take the focus away from mens issues. The study could have been on all Teenagers?

It's also discriminatory and sexist... we not sposed tdo dat!

I’m aware I’ll be downvoted for this but

why do people post stuff like this??

edit: line thru dumb words...

[–]TheNewMasterofTime 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

why do people post stuff like this??

Because the internet is filled with hate and honest questions are often downvoted into the dirt.

How does advocating for women’s issues somehow invalidate men’s issues?

The easy answer is it doesn't...not automatically.

However, since some people have filled their heads with women's issues, and spent all their time in women's issues echo chambers, they often assume that men have no issues. Further there is a strong tendency to blame all men for women's issues, and women do this because they feel they need to support the women around them and can't be critical of their friends.

Men are a bit better about that, but what happens is that they accept more than their fair share of negative criticism...or at least don't fight it.

Another problem is that women are so often just imagining they have issues that don't really exist. Many women love to be in the position of victim so much they will literally victimize themselves to get that status. Here is an extreme case:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tawana_Brawley_rape_allegations

Jussie Smollets are rare, but Tawana Brawley's are fairly common.

Tawana Brawley rape allegations

Tawana Vicenia Brawley (born December 15, 1971) is an African-American woman from New York who gained notoriety in November 1987 at age 15 when she accused four white men of kidnapping and raping her over a 4-day period. On November 28, 1987, Brawley was found in a trash bag after having been missing for four days from her home in Wappingers Falls, New York. She had racial slurs written on her body and was covered in feces. Brawley accused four white men of having raped her.

Bummer I hate making mistakes, thanks for catching it.

I thought it was a female only study for I don't know what reason. I downloaded the report a few days ago but haven't read it yet but because of that I didn't "click da link"...<sigh> the pretty picture would have stopped me being a goose. lol

[–]AdditionalNarwhal356 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Women are more likely to have depression, while men are more likely to have autism IIRC.

[–]MathematicianNo4277 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm guessing women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression, rather. The 80% of suicide victims being male must come from somewhere and depression is the only likely culprit.

[–]TheNewMasterofTime 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Women are more likely to suffer from a variety of neurosis and also more likely to cave to social conditioning....which of course opens them up to more neurosis....bulemia, anorexia, anxiety, thinking they are lesbian when they aren't....etc.

Women sing about how they don't care about their bad reputations. Most men don't need any affirmation to raise their middle fingers to what people think.

Suicide is not a simple issue. Part of the reason why men commit suicide more is simply because they are more competent in succeeding. I suspect its because men are more grounded in external reality of how the physical world works. Women seem to be more than half in a dream world all day if you ask me. Men can't do that.

[–]MathematicianNo4277 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The "more competent at succeding" line of reasoning to explain men's higher suicide rate contrasted to women's higher attempted suicide rate is very common, but I've never seen any credible source for it. Other explanations are just as believable.

For example conscious or subconscious awareness of the empathy gap coul lead more women than men to make suicide attempts as a call for help.

Or the tendency for men to access healthcare less, leading to the underreporting of unsuccessful male suicide attempts.

Men are more violent (as feminist put it) or women are less connected to reality (as you put it) is not convincing to me. People are not stupid. Any normally functionning adult is able to successfully end themselves if they actually mean it. If you fail your suicide attempt, you probably meant to fail.

[–]TheNewMasterofTime 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men are more violent (as feminist put it) or women are less connected to reality (as you put it) is not convincing to me. People are not stupid.

Yes they are and both genders too. Not being connected to reality is not proof of low intelligence...its proof of a lack of experience with reality or an inability to connect with reality. Dreamers can be as intelligent as anyone....a person with a doctorate in literature can be just as intelligent as someone with a doctorate in engineering....but one of those degrees is going to be useless in the real world.

For example conscious or subconscious awareness of the empathy gap coul
lead more women than men to make suicide attempts as a call for help.

That's not a real suicide attempt then is it? Its a fake one. I think you know that based on what you said and its a good point. Those numbers should not be in the stats as genuine attempts.

That said though, its the methods of suicide that men and women do that convinces me. Men are more like to blow their brains out or hang themselves, while women try pills and cut their wrists. Its just obvious from the start which ones are more likely to succeed.

[–]MathematicianNo4277 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

That's not a real suicide attempt then is it?

That's indeed my main point. In fact many of the "suicide attempts" accounted for in stats are simple self harm with no intention to even look like suicide. Hospital staff overreports a lot as a policy (better safe than sorry). I remember seeing a study about it somewhere around here quite some time ago.

Familied tend to see injuries on men as more "normal" and women communicate more. Histrionic behaviour especially is very feminine and is connected to a lot of performative self harm. Women and girl who self harm therefore go to the hospital and are counted as suicide attempts a lot more.
