I'm having to let this sink in. It gives context to so many things I experience and see around me that I have been unable to comprehend.

This is brilliant, its made me look at my own attitude in a different way. The lie about 'all men are rapists' always makes me angry, and I never quite understood why. After all, just saying that doesn't make me a rapist. I wouldn't be annoyed if somebody claimed that 'all men are narcissists', or 'all men are drug addicts' and those statements are just as silly as the rape statement.

The problem is that some people believe the rape lie, and that takes away my innocence. I am considered guilty no matter how much I love and care for women. I have only ever done the best I can for the women in my life, and that deserves to be acknowledged.

This really struck a chord for me. Society infantalizes women. parents teach their daughters to look out for the bad man. We have a media who gives stories about bad guys and good guys. In the news they talk specifically about the innocent women and children. We have a narrative that suggests men always have agency.

Is it any wonder women can't see the innocent man? Is it any wonder that men are compared to a template of Schrodinger's rapist? You don't support women? You must be a misogynist

I've recently begun working with several friendly, chatty, well-educated feminists and I've been dreading and trying to prepare for the inevitable conversation/s about feminism/MRM/gender issues and this article is.... perfect. There are many things I can talk about with confidence and in many cases personal experience, but rape is.....tricky (to say the least) and I know it will come up, it always comes up, and this article frames some of the discussion in exactly the way I've been struggling to frame it.

This was a really great article. Especially the from female potency down.

Men are expected to see female sexual aggression as meaningless, ineffectual, just being part of life. Who as a man are you going to complain to? You're just supposed to deal with it, often there is no "speaking up" about it because most don't believe it's something to speak up about. We rightly hear tragic stories about female victims are told that their victimization was their own fault and could have been prevented by wearing more clothes or what not, yet with male victims there is no "fault", no victimization is said to have occured.

And later in life when men become hardened to the world, we look back and conclude that he must simply be that way because he's male. Lived a normal male life, and we all know how privileged that is. Articles like this hi-light how many men who enter the prison system have been victims of sexual abuse, in many cases victimized by women. As an expert here in NZ said, we would be much better served by giving more resources towards male victims of sexual abuse than to keep inflating our prisons.

I love the article, but I wish someone (with some education in statistics) would put together something like this, but for rape stats.

I agree with all the talking points, but I disagree with "My name is Alison and I am a survivor of rape hysteria" as the framework for this essay because it trivializes rape, all rapes, of any gender, to suggest that "rape hysteria" needs survivors like actual rape does. I know it's meant to be ironic, but it isn't ironic. It's just offensive. Once again, glad about every single last one of the talking points, not so happy about that particular line.
