A female lead in GTA4 would really limit what they could do story wize in the game. Just imagine for a minute if the lead was a female and she got into a scuffle with male character and got punched in the face? All you would hear about is how GTA4 promotes beating women and promoting rape culture. A male character can get stomped and punched without issue. Having a female lead would either make the story incredibly generic and politically correct, or it would get the game banned for sure!

Edit: I meant GTA5, not GTA4.

Oh no, a major video game franchise is repeating what worked before. What a shock. I heard Mirror's Edge was going to reuse the female character too.

On the other hand, and I apologize if this comes across as blunt, but what the hell is this issue doing on the MR sub?

I mean, someone wants a video game changed. Even if this woman got exactly what she wanted, my rights as a male would not be affected at all. Nada.

If she were calling for a law to make Rockstar change their ways, I'd say we have a cause to rally around. If people tried to ban the game, I'd be there. This is someone wanting a video game to be different. Yawn.

No you daft bint, the media was demonizing the series because of the violence. The only time I heard someone talk bad about is when they mention you can run over hookers. Are you forced to run over hookers? No you're not. Do hookers exist in real life? Yeah they do. Does Rockstar aim to create a semi realistic world/ parody of the real world with as much detail as possible? You bet they do. I don't see the issue here.

Simply casting a woman in place of one of the three men would have been not only pretty badass, but also a step in the right direction for femininity in games, in which the industry so desperately needs right now.

Translation: " I like GTA but i want it to cater to ME!"

I know it is not entirely Rockstar's fault. Generally, when met with a choice to play as a male or female in a game, men will pick a man. Why wouldn't they? Playing as a man in a game portrays an extent of their identity. When I am given a choice, I always play as a woman. Why? Because I want to be able to relate to my character on a personal level. I love having that choice, considering I am constantly forced into playing as a typical male character in most other situations (see: majority of main characters in games within the past twenty years).

Translation: "PLEASE CATER TO ME" Also one of the protagonists is a dad struggling to connect to his family, mainly his son while juggling the double life of being a bank robber. Shit that's so typical right? /s

A quick Google search has shown me some particularly unflattering comments about women in games as a whole, which is expected. When I searched specifically for female protagonists in Grand Theft Auto, I came across comments such as this:

Also at this point , what do these people want? GTAV to have a female protagonist? Oh okay have them rewrite the game to fill your needs and have it be delayed, that surely won't piss more people off! /s

No, if you want to play a female protagonist in an open world crime game , you have two options, either stick to saints row and/or write an open letter to rockstar that you want a female protagonist FOR THE NEXT GAME. And ask nicely, for the love of god , I'm sick of the tone of these opinion pieces.

I remember using cheat codes in Vice City to play as a bikini wearing lady, it was fantastic.

The GTA characters are all kind of sleazy and awful, and fun and dirty, I could totally see a cool female protagonist. Especially in GTA5, where you've got three guys already. Just imagine, a really gross sleazy meth dealing woman, she keeps a gun in her grungy underwear! She wears an army green tank top without a bra, and she curses a lot and sometimes she spits those giant booger spits onto the ground when you don't move her around a lot. And sure she gets punched, but she takes it just as well as a methhead three times her size, because it's a video game! And video games aren't real.

Just think about it for a sec when anyone punches you they gain one star wanted level and you get police back up by just calling 911 on your cell.

Run around and try to seduce the strongest criminal to do your dirty work then have him killed after he's served his purpose. Buy outfits and obtain a sugar daddy to buy you guns and equipment.

They want reality them fine give.it to them but don't think for a second that just replacing the lead with a female is realistic without watering down the story greatly
