The atomization of society means that being part of a community is becoming increasingly rare. Communities dwindling over time means that close relationships are becoming increasingly rare.

For women in particular, this means inevitably being on their own in the face of assault. No close ties with any man means that no man will step in to defend her, which means women will be increasingly seen as easier targets than they already are (since women aren't going to win against men in a fist fight).

And since legislation is increasingly pushing for gun control (thus depriving women of the one thing that they can use to level the playing field and keep themselves safe), women are thus increasingly left more and more vulnerable to any men that want to target and hurt then.

Therefore, it's completely understandable for modern women to be wary of men. Full stop. If she gets assaulted, there is very little chance of her getting any kind of justice or retribution. Due process means having to get evidence for crimes that generally leave behind very little evidence. And given how often women are harassed/assaulted even with all the precautions they already do take, removing some of those precautions just means they'd be even more likely to be hurt than they already are.
