It's as valid a concept as Toxic Ad Hominem-ism, which is what they're committing by using it all the damn time.

An excess of a virtue (confidence) is a vice (pride). Too little of a virtue is also a vice (shyness?).

There's therefore toxic femininity whenever it's in excess, and unfemneinity when the virtue of femnimity is too paltry. Toxic masculinity could be excessive male virtue (aggression/competitiveness where ones fighting all the time and dominating individually when they should be on a team??)

But definitely, they're using the new term to shut us up. It'll take many PHDs to withstand the bullshit social theories the media keeps pumping out and attacking us with.

It’s a valid concept that’s intentionally misused as an all-purpose cudgel to bash masculinity writ large by way too many disingenuous people.

It’s been misapplied and stretched in colloquial usage to the point where it’s unusable and unhelpful in most debates and discussions.

Oh yes. The concept is to demonize masculinity.

Of course they'll deny this and many will even make themselves believe they don't want to demonize masculinity. But all you have to do is challenge them on why they insist on using it. They even acknowledge that it constantly gets "misunderstood". When you push a little, it turns out there's nothing they will admit it expresses that cannot be expressed with other terms like "gender roles".

That leaves only the misandric part it expresses. And their insistence on using it instead of the alternatives, tells us that that is precisely what they want it to express - whether they realize it or not.

I thought toxic masculinity referred to when masculine stereotypes become toxic to men. For example: being expected to not express feelings openly because it's not 'manly'.

In some way i do believe it is, but it's used way too much, it has just begun to lose all meaning. I believe it's best used when hyper masculinity is causing a negative effect on something or someone, but not to every masculine person that you have a bit of disdain towards.
