The fact that women kill themselves more often than they are murdered is definitely a good point that will help people put this into context.

There's another stat about that percentage of men and women killed by strangers on the street. It's actually very rare. About 20 a year I think. And the math works out to men being 8 times as likely to be randomly murdered while out in public.

I think OP is on to something here. I just double checked the annual murder rates and suicide rates in Canada in the period of 2000 to 2007 and I find that on average, women die 8.8 times as often from suicide as compared to murder (meaning that women are nearly 10x more likely to kill themselves then be killed by a man).

I think that this exercise points out two very important FACTS:

Suicide is a grossly underestimated threat to our safety - we are 7x to 10x more at risk of dying from suicide than murder, and
The threat that women face from men is vastly over stated, particularly by feminists. As to why feminists don't talk about the much graver problem of women killing themselves while concentrating their efforts on "femicide" is unclear, but I strongly suspect that if they changed the conversation to the threat women face from suicide, they would have to deal with the issue of men being at far greater risk. Alternatively, what it may mean is that feminists concentrate on "femicide" not because they want to protect women, but because they want to paint men as dangerous.

Even though men commit so many murders, not only are women more likely to be killed by somebody they know (rather than some stranger) but men are the victims of murder the majority of the time. Men have much more reason to be scared for their life on the street than women do.

I'm as big on men's rights as the next guy. But you can't genuinely use this statistic as a talking point if you also use "men die by suicide disproportionately." If you do this, you run the risk of undercutting your own logic and just reinforce the sentiment that men do the most killing, even of themselves.

If someone says "men do all the killing" you're probably better off disengaging with them considering that person is highly likely to be an illogical person who will not be swayed no matter what statistic you throw at them.

I think when women talk about how dangerous it is for women they are talking about sexual assault. Also most of the women murdered were killed by their ex partners, or current partners. Im kinda curious to see how many of the women who committed suicide also lived in abusive relationship/were victims of sexual abuse. Im sure that information is difficult to combine (especially because of the huge amount of harassment that never gets reported) but if anyone has that information or wants to do the googling then please send it to me. Not saying "oh all suicides are caused by men", im literally just curious whether that's the case or not. I would also want to know how many of those suicides are because of bullying from other women

Missing a key point there that a good chunk of those women killed themselves because of something a man did TO them, so it's far from cut and dry.

I'd love to know how many people (of either sex) end up killing themselves specifically because of what others have done to them.

I have personal experience of talking a drunk woman off a 10-storey ledge because 2 years after recovering from a brutal rape where the perpetrator got off by claiming it was consensual because he took a picture of her laying with her eyes shut on his bed (she was "playing dead" in the hope he'd leave the room). 2 years later she was out with friends who convinced her to go to a club and he was there and purposely "bumped" into her and held her arm tight so she couldn't get away from him. she froze up and he told her how worthless she was and a slut and she got what she deserved and if she didn't like it she should just kill herself and "do everyone a favour".

If I hadn't been there, she'd be another statistic of "a woman committing suicide" without anyone ever knowing what drove her to it.

How many women "survive" being raped only to kill themselves in the years afterwards because of something that triggered the trauma?

I have an aunt eating herself to death because "she doesn't have the courage" to just kill herself (something she told my mother) after losing two husbands to cancer and having both her sons murdered.

it's a slower form of suicide, but what percentage of them kill themselves after losing a child? I know at least one woman who did (a neighbour) when I was growing up.

I live in Australia and we have about 40 male suicides a week and a lot of people (perhaps without clear evidence) are saying that up to half of those are related to family rights issues (i.e. mothers using the courts to keep men away from their kids). I have personal experience of that too and it wouldn't surprise me at all, as I was pretty close to it myself during the worst of it and it's almost 3 years later and it still isn't resolved.

I guess my point is that simple statistics like this don't really work when they take away the human element and that just saying "because X is Zx worse than Y we shouldn't deal with the problems that Y poses" is more than a little disingenuous.

The current thing in the Uk, where I am from too, is more about them having to live in fear of it more than the numbers of full blown incidents. Deaths is the extreme but it’s about intimidation, threats and possibilities as much as that as well which is something these stats don’t show the occurrence of as that would never have reliable data because nobody would report every instance of that.

This is a fantastic data point, and I'd really love to see how it compares against other countries. There are multiple studies out that demonstrate that women are less happy now, even in the midst of militant feminism, than they ever have been before. One would think the advances in the feminist movements would bring a positive response to a woman's happiness, but it does not appear to be so. Thanks for sharing this.
