There are separate Oscar categories for men and women, so I don’t see what all the fuss is.

It definitely sounds true. With exceptions such as Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, and Meryl Streep, most prominent older actors are indeed male. The likes of Reese Witherspoon reach their peak in their early 30s, while Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp may have yet to see their peak and at any rate are still going strong.

Meanwhile, I can actually think of few male actors under 35 that I, as an absolute amateur, would consider Oscar or Cannes-worthy.

So there are definitely prominent gender aspects to this. Whether that amounts to gender discrimination that we can do anything about is a relatively moot issue. There are some things we simply cannot easily change.

Yes, I believe this. AND, I also believe that many older actresses have had fewer roles available to them - although I don't know if that's still true. That would mean that more older men have access to good roles than older women do.
