Literally just gave me flashbacks. Wife used to beat the ever loving shit out of me and then call the police. I'd get arrested. She'd use that as ammo to pound in my head that the only way to escape is killing myself.

Fuck I hate this so much.

my grandfathers life was ruined in a similar situation… his wife was horribly abusive to him and their children, my mother included… He managed to get away from her, but she scarred him so deeply that he never remarried and hardly interacted with women for the rest of his life. For most of my life you couldn’t even mention her or he would get PTSD.

he was the only man in the history of my region to gain custody of children over the mother when he did in the 80s as well… crazy how many women probably got away with doing awful things and still took the children.

Both my parents were drunks and fought a lot, but after my dad had a moment of "sobering up" while he was being an absolute shithead he never touched a drink again. This would piss my mom off because now she was the only drunk shithead in the house now. My dad wouldn't reciprocate in the screaming matches anymore.

My dad had been brought to the drunk tank a few times while he was an actual drunk, but after he sobered up he was still the one taken to the station the first few times. But then I finally got old enough where I grabbed my mother while she was going after my dad and had my youngest brother call the police. They showed up to her oldest kid scratched up and holding her with my two younger brothers crying and my dad looking absolutely broken about the situation. After that it was always my mom that got hauled off.

(Things have an eventual happy ending. Mom ended up spending time in psych, got sober, and when I was around 34 years old I started seeing flowers in the planters around the house for the first time since I was a child. My dad has the patience of a saint for dealing with that so long, I gave up decades ago. But it's amazing to have my mommy back!)

Shows that women can be abusers too. I myself would be gone the moment somebody is abusing or violating me.
