A vasectomy reversal is not always successful and should not be done if the thought is that the person might want kids and want it reversed.

I have the non-hormonal IUD and it works great.

Diaphragm. It's a pain to put in each time, but it's non hormonal. You just have to remember to put the spermicide on it each time. And if you lose or gain weight, you need to be refitted. Once it's in, you don't feel it at all, neither would he. I think you have to leave it in for a certain amount of time after sex, but it's really easy to remove too.

I had the IUD and it was a nightmare for my periods. They told me the periods would stop, but they got even worse. And it had to be surgically removed when me and husband wanted another kid because it got stuck in the wall of my uterus. Would not recommend to anyone.

I have the nexplanon and I love it! Different bcs use different hormones and I definitely found nexplanon way better than the pill. And I second your comment about not trusting oneself with timed bc methods lol.

I do want to encourage reconsidering IUDs tho! The copper IUD is THE non-hormonal BC option! It didn't work for me or u/PsychoticNurse, but I have a lot of friends that swear by it! Getting it in was one day of cramps and getting it removed felt like nothing. Plus if it doesn't work out, it's solely due to physical irritation, no weird hormonal symptoms to try and sus out. For me it just caused bad period cramps. My nexplanon, which I love, has ruined all my panties with spotting. 🥲

Insane to ask him to get a vasectomy unless he’s 100% certain he never wants kids. I actually just think it’s insane to ask anyone to get a vasectomy ever.

I don’t understand are most guys just not able to pull out? If you do successful pull out and cycle tracking I really don’t see why anything else is needed personally

I use Natural Cycles-it tracks your ovulation date based on your daily temperature & LH levels (among other factors, but those are the two main ones.) I’ve loved it and my husband and I have had zero issues. But, you’d have ‘red’ days and ‘green’ days and have to act accordingly. So, red days do require taking extra precaution, but it’s been an easy transition for us. Been using it for 2 years.

I have nexplanon. I dont think it affected my sec drive too much but after ten months in going to take it out now. This is because the mood swings have been horrible. And I saw this videos recently: Jordan Peterson interviewing this doctor on the hidden effects on hormonal birth control for woman. Skip 1 hour and 14 minutes in and they start talking about hormonal birth control. I would really recommend not getting nexplanon…

I have a copper IUD, it's been absolutely amazing. I'm planning on having it removed next year, but only because we want to start a family. There's a 10 year or 5 year option, and you can have them taken out whenever. There's a super low risk of them affecting fertility and fertility goes back to normal immediately after removal. Periods are admittedly a little more uncomfortable, but they're shorter and generally easier to manage, too. ☺️

1) don't have sex unless you are ready to get pregnant.

2) The rhythm method works to prevent pregnancy. Read "Taking charge of your fertility" by Toni Weschker. A slip up in discipline can lead to pregnancy though.

Full text: My boyfriend and I have a good sex life. We both have a high sex drive so any time one of us wants to have sex the other never is “not in the mood”. I really value our sexual chemistry. Neither of us like condoms, so the obvious alternative is birth control. But there isn’t a non-hormonal birth control for women that I’m aware of besides just using condoms. I’ve taken the pill before in high school because my period was irregular and my hormones were crazy with cramps and PMS. It helped me to be more regular but it really killed my sex drive. My period is regular and my cramps are normal now too that I’m older, but I don’t want to sacrifice my sex drive for birth control. The only one I’ll consider is nexplanon because the IUD is too invasive for my preferences and the pill and shot are too easy for me to make a mistake with. The only thing else I have considered is asking my boyfriend about a vasectomy since it’s reversible but I don’t know if he’d be open to it. Seems like a big ask. And a bit hypocritical since it’s invasive and I didn’t want an invasive procedure either. Any experience / advice?

I hated Nexplanon. It literally made me psychotic when I was on it. And I gained a lot of weight when I was on it too.

I did not get on with hormonal birth control because it affected my moods, caused bloating, PMS- symptoms. I’ve been on the copper IUD for almost 10 years and that’s the one that works best for me. Yes, the procedure is uncomfortable but on balance, the long term benefits far outweigh short term discomfort. Side effects are heavier and more painful periods (managed fine with ibuprofen) but mine settled after about 5-6 months.

Hormonal contraception works well for some women too. Patients say they like not having their periods and enjoy the mirena, nexplanon with minimal side effects. I recommend waiting for 6 months whilst being on them before deciding if it is for you or not.

The only one I would caution women against is the depo injections as they have been shown to cause weight gain and normal periods/fertility can take up to 18 months to return to normal after cessation so would need to bear that in mind if you’re thinking of family in the near future.

Vasectomies aren’t great as temporary contraception methods as reversals aren’t always successful.

If you speak to your PCP, they’d go through your medical history and concerns in depth to help you decide which works best for you.

Vasectomy is not an option. Because it’s not always reversible.

I recommend you to consider IUD please. Once inserted, it’s good for 5-10 years and don’t require maintenance at all. You can do copper IUD which is completely hormone free.

Here is the deal. Insertion can be painful experience. I had two IUd insertions - one before and one after childbirth. First insertion, my vagina got shut closed. They had to shove the ultrasound wand in there by force to check placement. I felt like I’ve been raped or something. Awful.

For the second insertion, I had very compassionate midwife as my provider (they provide OBGyn care too, not just babies). I told her how afraid I am of IUD. She prescribed me Xanax to relax an hour before and also a dose of Cytotec to open my cervix four hours prior to my appointment. I felt nothing during insertion. Literally took two minutes and I was shocked that it was done before I noticed. Granted that having baby prior also made it smooth experience. But I think cytotec did wonders loosening my cervix for easy entry. I’m very happy with my choice. Find yourself a compassionate provider to do an IUD. Do not accept no medication insertion at all.
