How much influence lawyers have on judges

As a former litigator, it matters a ton on knowing the judge. The majority of what you hire an attorney for is their relationship with the judge, and to an extent, the other attorney's in the bar.

We definitely did not like out of county attorney, but we were a beach town, so we didn't have a lot of new faces.

One of the primary reasons you retain an attorney is their familiarity with the court system in the county you are divorcing. You want to know their experiences with your specific judge, because judges have wide latitude from the bench.

You should ask your attorney for a recommendation for someone who is familiar with your county courthouse, for exactly the reason you stated here.

A well-reputed lawyer in a county will always have an advantage over the outside lawyer. The local lawyer will know the judge, not personally, but will have appeared before them many times, know the courtroom rules, know what pisses the judge off, know how hard and where they can push - how much of an advantage (i.e. enough to majorly impact the outcomes in the case) is hard to say but it sure doesn't hurt.

My judge and my lawyer been in the same county for ever and went to the Air Force academy together. Her lawyer was also a good ol boy the father of the one other divorce judge in the county, so it kind of canceled out both forces. If you are in a small county, it absolutely is a good thing to have a lawyer that is familiar with the judge

I think it depends on the jdx. If you are in a small jdx it can help or hurt because it is usually the same attorneys appearing in front of a few judges and most times the attorneys are known to the judges. In a larger jdx this won't be the case. In general though, if your lawyer is prepared and is following the rules and statutes judges will be grateful.

None. I do think in rare circumstances it can. And I’ve seen plenty of attorneys say they “know the mediator, judge, etc.” and it amounted to nothing lol.

What I would say is don’t expect your attorney to do the heavy lifting for you, even the best ones. If you are just accepting motions and hoping to put the situation on auto pilot, prepare for varying amounts of pain depending on the OC.
