If it's more than a 5 minute ride (longer the better) Take out a scrap of paper and start a tic tac toe game. Then pass it to her.

Don't be timid with the approach. If she is wearing headphone you are going to have to get her attention visually and probably physically (e.g. tap on the shoulder/arm). Someone recommended to me a good frame for these situations: You are saving her from a boring song or a boring book. She would rather chat with you than listen to that song for the 100th time.

This fine girl on the street in NYC. It was 12 midnight. She was carrying groceries, wearing headphones, and walking fast. It was 25 F degrees, drizzling, and she was clearly cold. I opened with, "Are you cold?" She hooked off of that. Talked for a block, got her number.

EDIT: This reminds me of my first ever number close from a stranger -- it was when I first started doing cold approaches. A really hot blonde was reading a book with headphones on, on the subway train in SF. I tapped her knee to get her attention. We talked for 20 minutes, got her number.

The more disruptive you are, the better, I think, because it shows confidence.

I need to field test this more, but after a while try throwing a paper ball at her to get her attention, then say "I'm bored" with a smile. I've done this a few times and have gotten good responses so far. It's playful.

I suppose when you look at it - If you are the dude who actually DOES approach in these situations vs the 98% who either:

a) think in their head "what if i said hi...no would that be weird? i don't know maybe AHHHH" b) don't bother

You're automatically putting yourself ahead of everyone else and demonstrating confidence
