There is a fine difference between holding a gaze and staring, same as between shaking someone's hand and holding it just a little too long.

Tip 1: never look down when you're walking. It makes you look depressed. The only girls you'll pick up this way are toddlers.

Tip 2: When the person coming toward you notices you, hold the gaze and smile. Most guys I've told this too say something about their smile being creepy. I just imagine that I'm looking at box full of wittle babeh kittehs or a really cute baby. This relaxes the muscles in your face the right way to give a genuine caring smile.
Note: If it's an HB 8/9 sometimes I'll give an audible "snicker" when she passes (assuming there were no IOIs). Sometimes she'll be so self-centered she'll get mad and turn around, this acts as a neg hit. Then mention something about how her shoes are cute, but don't really match everything else, etc.

Tip 3: When the person breaks their gaze, break yours (whether male or female). This establishes dominance because they were the first to break. I'm doing this more at work now, with my superiors -- it's having a great effect actually. There were some higher-ups who wouldn't give me the time of day before, who now chit chat with me because I appear more confident than them. Also note that if there are women around, they pay attention to these small "social cues" -- it's instinct for women to select the most "alpha" mate (note by alpha I do not mean douchebag), so they'll select based on these types of things. I like to make eye contact with people as I pass and go based off what they do. Some people will lock your eye contact. If they do, smile at them! Be personable! And sometimes they'll look away or down, in which case just keep right on rolling. This is one of the best ways to make an approach in public, because if you can get eye contact and a smile, you're on your way. I think the "stare straight ahead, don't look at anyone" looks really awkward.

Well if you make eye contact and fail to open within 5-10(max) seconds I would say don't attempt at all, if you're trying to run game. Herpin and derpin around I'll look before a HB passes me and give a subtle smile, but that is all. If somebody looks at you and you catch them and they break eye contact immediately that's not a good sign. But if they break away after a second or two pause, opening wouldn't hurt.

I've recently started looking people in the eyes a lot more often (I used to shy away if I caught eye contact with anyone) and I've already noticed so much of a difference! I've had so many women smile back and check me out which I've never had before, it feels so good!

So yes, always look at people in the eyes (except same sex, unless you are gay. that only turns out to be awkward) and smile if you lock contact. I try to look at them until they look away or it becomes too long for you. This single thing alone has boosted my self confidence exponentially.

In large crowds, I would suggest just slowly looking at different people who catch your attention. Don't stare for too long but don't be afraid to check them out. If you're lucky you might lock eyes and be given a nice opening opportunity.

I actually have a question on this: how does one avoid making eye contact without looking sad/suspicious/terrified?

I make eye contact with others almost involuntarily. It's just something I do. But, I do not want to be approached or make small talk, etc etc. I didn't feel this was good enough to warrant my own post. Help?

I am a people watcher. I am always looking at someone, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything. I think it might make me look like a creep, though... :P

Anybody else experience a lot of eye contact battles? I am friends with 3 very confident women and they are always challenging me to what ends up feeling like a starting contest. I want to maintain alpha status in the group so I don't concede. Is that what's going on here? Is that the right reaction?

This also happens with co-workers, seems like it might be different there, but I still don't let up :).

I open quickly using periphs before eye contact is made. If eye contact is made from a distance, smiles ensue, nonverbal energy is tested before an opener.
