As the title says, I have the emotional intelligence of a two year old. I don’t understand facial expressions or non-verbal cues such as body language or even tone of voice. I have an extremely hard time deciphering the emotions of those around me and I honestly don’t even feel much emotion myself. As you can imagine this makes attempting to socialize with the people I work/go to class with pretty much impossible. I also (apparently) don’t enjoy having fun, nor do I know what fun is according to my co-workers; in my opinion fun is working on something at work or listening to a lecture. As a result I don’t really go to bars or clubs much and this only furthers the gap between myself and others in my age group (18 – 30).

I have tried looking for people with similar hobbies in my area but I have been unsuccessful so far in finding anyone nearby. So I have come to Seddit looking for advice on how to improve my understanding of social dynamics, as I am not smart enough to figure it out on my own.

Right now I am working 30 hours a week with 16 credit hours for the summer semester so I don’t have much free time and I can’t really spend hours sitting at a bar learning how to talk to people.

So, what can I do to improve my ability to socialize and understand others emotions? I’m not really interested in relationships so most of this stuff seems like it won’t be too useful to me. All I want to learn how to do is function in a normal social environment without feeling like I need to constantly fake every social interaction while feeling that I am somehow “wrong” or an outsider.
