tl;dr: New girl came to a party where I knew everyone, I thought she was cute, turns out she thought I was gay. I let it bother me too much and probably didn't handle my interactions with her well after that. What would you do?

Why she thought that is not important I guess, I can only assume because I wasn't afraid to dance and I wasn't as stern and stiff as some people there, but beyond that I dunno. I am far from flamboyant, and I don't really act much differently than any of my friends, so I dunno.

Someone told me she thought I was gay and I got really bummed. Not because I am prejudice or anything stupid like that, but just because I thought the girl was cute and seemed cool and the first thing she thought when seeing me was not, "sexy and cool guy," but rather, "gay?"

So my reaction was to immediately go and sit down next to her, look her in the eyes and say, "So I hear you think I'm gay." She seemed caught off guard at first and then responded negatively about how I was looking at her. After that I completely wrote the girl off in the context of wanting to get to know her better for any reason, but for the rest of the night I was still really annoyed and found myself acting differently to sort of prove to her that I was not gay.

I feel like I handled the whole situation really poorly. I am no PUA, and I am just a casual reader of seddit, but I would appreciate some feedback or insight. I probably shouldn't have let it bother me so much, but it was just a gathering of friends, not a night out, where she was the only new person. Just a disappointing night, with her and myself. Words, thoughts?
