Just how powerful is body language reading really?

It's an extremely powerful tool, no doubt about it. It's not like you're absolutely positive what you're reading in someone's body language, but it's a pretty good indicator. It's just something you keep aware of and log the information you're receiving along with everything else.

I'm on a date last night and we sit at a table to watch live music. I move my chair 6 inches closer to hers, she moves her chair closer to mine. Positive sign from me, positive sign from her.

I put my leg next to hers, she presses her leg against mine. Positive signs from both of us again that we like each other.

I get up to use the restroom and slide my hand across her shoulders as I pass, she gets another sign that I like her. When I return, she crosses her legs, faces me more, and drapes her raised leg on my knee. My hand goes on her knee, because she started the deliberate contact, so I reciprocate.

I spilled a glass of water, my leg gets wet and I tell her I'm soaked. She feels up my thigh, well okay, it's go time. I touched her anywhere I wanted after that. I mentioned that I've been wanting to feel her hair since she cut it (undercut fade, long on top). I caressed her short fade and she immediately kissed me.

All of that is body language. Every touch, every movement, every angle our bodies were in. They were all indicators to each other that we like each other and each indicator creates comfort that each next move is acceptable.

Alternatively, what if she moved away? What if she didn't touch me after my touches? What if she didn't kiss me after touching her hair, what if she swatted my hand away? Well, those would all be indicators that whatever I do next probably isn't okay.

A woman's proximity to you, where her eyes look, what her hands are doing, what her legs are doing, they're all information for you. So yes, body language is an invaluable tool.

You will have to determine for yourself. Many guys have problems reading signals given by women. Nonverbal communication is important, but is only a part of the response you need to watch. You also need to watch the signals you are giving.

You might look into seddit favorites like the book "What Every BODY Is Saying." I learned a few interesting things from it.

It’s extremely useful. It can be applied in any social situation: with a friend, a coworker, groups, presentations, yourself.

IMO it is indispensable and works in tandem with the analytic side of our minds - we need both aspects.

Examples of uses: feeling the energy of a group of people shift and make decisions on (jokes, topics, may of behavior, energy level) to adapt to their frequency; talking to one other person in private and feeling out when they are opening up and more vulnerable, then asking more intimate questions; conversely if said question slightly bothers them to lighten it a tiny bit; knowing who wants to continue a conversation and what for; see who is actually interested, how to play around and just fuck with people in a lighthearted manner, etc.

I would actually say that learning perceptive/observational skills are much more important than practicing “game”. Practicing these “seduction” skills only makes people overthink, more nervous, and it only applies to one area in life. On the other hand, learning to understand all people gets you to connect with them and yourself more.

If someone is really good at it then yes its damn powerful tool man.

You can find out everything. Being able to tell whether someone is attracted to you or not is child's play for body language experts.

Its also good for lie detection, determining someone's moods, being able to tell how someone feels about a certain thing, someone's background, occupation, hobbies, even someone's diet, habits, and lifestyle.

Why are you asking this in the Seduction subreddit though? Knowing how to read body language isn't enough to get a girl to want you. You can easily tell if she already does though.

I feel like you're not really asking if body language matters.

Of course it matters. Of course you can read body language. But it's not magic. It's not "powerful" all by itself. It doesn't let you read someone's mind.

But if all you ever do is observe, then it's all pointless.

You must be able to observe AND act. You must be able to get your ass in there and interact with someone. Because reading someone's reactions to your actions, is when you really start to get the important information.

I prefer reading body language over basically anything else. It helps me screen girls before I approach (which I still am working on). And it has helped me immensely with one on one dates. If you check out this FR i wrote up you will see what I am talking about with body languge/eye contact. It can tell you a lot about the other person and give you insight into exactly what they are thinking. If you and the other person are on similar frequencies you can actually speak to one another through body language only. In this FR I actually got to the point with this girl that we stopped talking completely for about 5-10 min and were just speaking via eye contact. It was amazing.

Its easy to misread signals. You can learn more from law enforcement how they analyze body language.

One thing though, with extremely shy people they give off "wrong" body signals so its easy to misinterpret how they really are feeling.

It’s definitely a powerful tool! I was on a date with a guy and I wanted him to know I was feeling him without saying it - so while we were facing each other at a bar, i put my leg in between both of his. He put his hand on my knee and looked at me for approval and all I had to do was smile. We had a great time!

Desmond Morris is a zoologist who wrote a book called "The Naked Ape". He went on to create a catalogue of human body language all over the world and made a TV series about it.
