Not outright refused but certainly experienced way more skepticism beyond the listed requirement/verifications. Imagine if the roles were reversed lol. Reminds me of health insurance versus car insurance. When men cost more, it’s legal to charge more. When women do, illegal!!

When I went thru my 1st divorce I needed an apartment. First place I looked, the lady asked why you looking for an apartment. I said I'm selling my house and going thru a divorce. She punched away at her computer and announced we have no places available for the date you looking. Then silence. Maybe it was a coincidence.

Literally driver over to the next complex. Male rental agent. Shows me the unit, they had plenty. Asked me why I was looking for an apartment. Gave same answer. The guy looked me in the eye and said, Teddy I will take care off you. Guy was spot on closing the deal and making sure unit was ready on date. Always gave me a big hi when I saw him.

Bruh that happened in my third world country and the guy sued landlord’s ass in europe human rights court or whatever it is called and he got some money from that mf’s wallet like a boss.

There are fair housing laws on the books in .ost states, and definitely federal laws against this. Sue her pants off and become HER landlord!

While I wasn't denied it, I did have to deal with some initial concerns that popped up because I'm a guy.

Quite a few years ago, after taking a gap year in uni and restarting halfway through the academic year, I was looking for available rooms with few options. A friend on the course recommended me to someone who had a room spare in a house with five girls. Didn't know them, but after meeting several of the girls and the letting agency I was given the thumbs up and took the room.

Turns out one of the girls I didn't meet wasn't happy with me moving in, with both her and her mother complaining about it to the landlord and letting agency. According to them, I needed a criminal background check because I was a guy and it was wrong for them to allow me to move in with a group of girls because I was male. The issue, in particular, was that I would be sharing living space with this girl (the layout of the house was each of the three main floors had two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom with a communal living room in the basement. Not separate flats, but essentially a large house with multiple rooms).

Things worked out fine though. No one else, including the rest of the girls, had any issue with me and the letting agency simply told her and her mum that, due to how the rental contract was written, if I didn't move in, then everyone else would have to pay extra rent to make up the balance. They relented and she decided to do a placement for the rest of the year in another university while still paying her part of the rent. So had the whole floor to myself.

As a single man, I'm at the bottom of the priority list for social housing. I got removed from the local council property list after a few months of not applying when I was made redundant. I queried it and they said that because I wasn't applying clearly I didn't need new housing. I wasn't applying because I didn't have a stable income so there wouldn't have been much point in trying to get a place at the time. They said it was standard policy, but I queried this due to a friend of mine being in the exact same situation and she was still on the list. She joined later than myself and was also still higher up on the priority. They ignored me after that.

It's very much a thing where I live. Landlords will openly state they rent to women only and we can't really do anything about it.

Once had a landlady say she didn't normally rent to young men but in my case she'd make an exception.

Not housing, but a stipend and covered tuition for grad school.

Luckily I was sharp enough to notice the “contract” my first company out of grad school wanted me to sign wasn’t a “contract.”

As an exchange student, I have faced this both in France and Spain. Especially the rooms offered by families, they outright mention in their description that the room is only available for females. Its less extreme in case of shared student apartments, but certainly difficult then compared with females.

I rented in US when studying abroad didnt notice anything weird.

Here in europe i did phone about a apt in the country and the woman was acting weird on the phone with me and never called back. So it seems it could be.

But i have also heard lots of males facing issues with female landlords on the internet. If theres lots of women staying in the hse already that could be it or misandy Im sure it's illegal though.

When we left an appartment we were renting to relatives of my husband, they asked us to do visits with potential new tenants. A painter (or plumber?) was interested. Seemed serious, polite, stable income. We recommended him but they said no, not a working class guy from central europe. They instead chose a woman on poverty income. Both working class, both foreign, the only difference to them was gender. We had not advised the woman, she seemed sketchy.

Turns out she was, turned tricks in the place, stopped paying rent, trashed it and left. I lost quite a bit of money in this too as she did not do the formalities to put gaz and electricity in her name, so i got charged for her, never got my money back. (I was very slow to notice the money taken out of my account, I'm to blame for that.)

Yes, I've had landlords say they won't rent their property to a group of young men.

Never had a problem as an older man though.

when i was looking for a room to rent in a shared house years ago, i saw several ads that said female only explicitly. one that i went and looked at that didn't explicitly say this had all female tennants, and wouldn't you know, they called later said they "decided on someone else", cant prove it but i suspect it was because i was male.

I understand why some people would be skeptical about renting to a man in certain situations, I don’t really have an issue with that even though it kinda sucks. The issue I have is in society pretending that men don’t face discrimination or hardships in any way due to their gender though, because this is a perfect example of how men do have it harder in some ways. Everyone faces unique challenges in life, it’s just so shitty that half the population gets completely invalidated and not cared about because they have a penis.

It's very common in the countries I have lived. I myself have been refused a lot of times. But, in most cases they will say that they are looking for a family as a tenant because it is a family environment and blah blah.

Yes I have. In my home country, long long ago when I was a student, it was next to impossible to find a room for rent.

I mean if you were a girl, no problem then. My mother tongue has gendered endings, and 99% of room ads were about "the girl college students"

So I could find one, eventually, and spent a year there.

The old lady, who was a landlord, rented the same room out to 2 girls the next year. Later, I heard from her that she hadn't expected such a mess from them.

It was commonly told that "the girls are quieter and cleaner"
