Judge won't weigh in on parenting plan disagreements (ex seeking extreme control) and said if we can't agree, he would appoint a GAL. Ex is demanding a 2 hour ROFR and threatening to have a GAL brought into our lives to get what she wants.

If it gets to GAL, make sure you're the one signing the checks, regardless of how fees are split. It doesn't matter but it does.

I’m afraid this will be my situation in the coming months. STBX wants to take the kid 10 hours away so they can live with her family. To quite literally a two stop light town that is not close to anything. Doesn’t matter to her, her parents have money to continue to spoil my lazy wife.

Even the 12 hours you're proposing is too short in practice and no judge is going to order 2 or 6. You've got to get over the fear of the ex - she has just as much to lose from a GAL in this custody fight as you do and she didn't become a legal expert all of a sudden when divorce was filed.

Were Working with a GAL now all a gal is going to do is cash checks then push and push for an agreement until one of you caves, 2 hour rofr is quite silly, but another lawyer whose gonna cost 10k is even sillier, id give it to her to get it signed, that ROFR stuff is hard to prove she gonna take you back to court because you had a sitter watch the kids for 3 hours that's not gonna happen.

How old are your children?

Appointing a GAL is standard procedure for determining parenting time when parents cannot agree. A judge will simply rubberstamp the recommendation unless one party can demonstrate why the GAL's recommendation should not be adopted. Expect the GAL to take 6 months to write the report, and cost you $15k (split evenly between both parties).

Anything less than a 48 hour ROFR is drama inducing. Examples: It doesn't allow the kids to spend the weekend at grandma's or sleepovers with friends. The judge obviously hasn't had parents back in their courtroom with a 2-hour ROFR before, otherwise the judge would have more of an opinion.

Here's the thing about 2-hour ROFR: It's nearly impossible to enforce. She'd have to hire a PI to prove anything. So if she's the one that's demanding it from you, then you need to do the cost-benefit analysis to figure out of it's worth going the GAL route vs just accepting it and not adhering to it.

depends as to how highly you place your children in your life.they will be weaponized against you. she will do it and she will make you dance according to her tune the more importance you give them. You will need to keep fighting.

on the otherhand who knows, your kids might actually like you after 2 decades
