I've pointed this out to women on a few occasions, to demonstrate how and why quoting statistics in this debate can be very misleading and not really portray a 'real world experience' appropriately.

Hell, between May of '22 and April of '23, there were at least 162 incidents in which a child under the age of 13 inadvertently shot either themselves or another child under 13, with at least 71 of the victims dying. Does that data suggest that a random child in the woods is statistically more of a threat than a random bear?

I think the problem with inserting statistics into the conversation is that the conversation was never really meant to be taken literally in the first place. As one woman told me, men cannot conceptualize the fear that women experience when it comes to being around strange men in certain situations, so the bear is used as an example of a fear that the average man can conceptualize.

So, while the data may demonstrate that statistically speaking, a random woman in the woods probably poses a bigger threat to me than a black bear, when it comes to a real world application, I wouldn't actually ever find myself fearing a random woman the way that I would fear a bear.

Just an FYI, your source states more than that single statistic. If you read it, certain types of assault/abuse are more frequently perpetrated against women, and certain types happen more to men. You’re basing your whole opinion off of a sentence in one single source. Women (sane ones anyway) aren’t trying to justify women who also do horrible things, but there’s no reason why assault perpetrated by men is as common as it is. Anyway, here’s some statistics from multiple sources that back my reasoning. Maybe next time you wanna make a post hating on women for speaking their mind (kind of like what you do here) you won’t look at one statistic and run with it :)

It’s not fair to cherry pick the safest variety of bear and compare to a much more diverse cohort. It’d be much more fair to compare all people (including men) to all bears. Most of which are obviously capable of harm, but with no desire to deal with your BS. Then there are some like grizzly bears, dangerous, but generally harmless unless provoked. And then a tiny number of polar bears, wants violence, sincerely wants to eat you.
