Long term relationships are insanely hard work to maintain, and most people don't bother. Some are unlucky enough to be naturally compatible enough with a person that you get to the stage of moving in with them or getting married or having kids before the fact that you haven't been maintaining the relationship starts to become a problem.

As the kids / work / house stress increases, the individuals spend nearly no energy on their partner, and literally none on themselves. They 'forget' who they're doing all this life with. They 'forget' who they are. They feel deeply overworked and unsatisfied and then they'll find someone new, who has time to listen to your problems, and makes you feel heard, and hell maybe even sexy, and breaking up is so, so, so much work. Lawyers. Moving house, maybe even moving states or countries, then you're 'on your own'. So some people do the lazy, instantly gratifying thing instead of accepting responsibility.

Cheating has always been a thing, internet / social media just made it more visible.

Part of it is that monogamy has been the societal norm for centuries, and a lot of people are like square pegs trying to fit themselves into that round hole, no pun intended.

I watched a podcast, the diary of a ceo, where he interviewed psychologists (the gottman doctors) on this topic. One factor was when partners ignore their significant others “bids” for attention. Small comments here and the partner makes to grab their attention like, “oh look at that,” or little things. When the partner ignores these bids for attention, it makes the other feel worthless over time. Their emotional needs are not met and they feel devalued. So they turn to others. I recommend you listen to the podcast it’s really good insight to maintain a relationship to meet the needs of your partner

Snickers bars are great and I love them but every now and then I might want to eat a Milky Way or an almond joy or heck even a rieses pieces if I’m feeling adventurous. Doesn’t mean snickers aren’t my favorite chocolates but after having them everyday they do get less tasty. Lmao.

In all seriousness is always about the grass is greener and of course the mess that comes with the breakup. People tend to take their loved ones for granted so a new and exciting person can easily make them feel special again. People chase that honeymoon phase feeling, so couples need to make sure to keep things fresh and try new things together. Whether is bedroom or just hobbies and stuff. It gets harder the more responsibilities they get such as house, kids, etc. Also social media is a huge contributor on why people cheat since again we go back to grass is greener.

You want excuses I can give you a hundred . At the end of the day I wanted sex at that moment in time and she wasn’t in close enough proximity so I found the nearest thing that was around that didn’t require a lot of effort .

People cheat IF they can .

If you are asking about why they would cheat with a particular person - that person makes them think about sex and is available for fucking .

I was very tempted to cheat and never did, but I have some insight. Personally I never cheated on any partner but I was very tempted to cheat on my ex because I didn't respect her and I didn't realize that I had completely lost respect for her because shes a wonderful person and very kind. So sex with her felt like a chore because I was no longer having sex with someone I valued or respected as a partner and an equal. But everyone does it for different reasons but for me there was serious relationship problems I wasn't fully aware of that led to my eyes going elsewhere

Imagine a guy who works in an ER and does 50-60 hour weeks, goes 6 months without a single day off. After awhile whomever you come home to is either asleep already and you'll be gone before they get up. After all that going on for so long your significant other looks at you as a paycheck.

I used to cringe at all these "do you want to eat vanilla ice cream every day for the rest of your life?" explanations. but, as someone in an open relationship: sorry fellas, it's absolutely true. I have never cheated before opening up our relationship because I couldn't imagine a scenario in which the experience of the cheating could actually keep up with the allure and excitement of the idea. it was bound to be disappointing.

but frankly, knowing for sure what's out there and not having to wonder about it has, if anything, given me more appreciation for my partner.

also, all these "ideas" to spruce up your sex-life after 10 years of being together, sorry, just no. my partner likes to be slapped around, i don't like to do that. negotiating this doesn't do anyone a favor. same goes for some of my kinks.
