What do you think of the Queensland police's media release for Men’s Health Week?

So let’s get this straight…it’s Men’s Health Week and they tell us to…not be violent to women?

I understand the intentions of the message, but I dislike the assumptions it makes that all men will eventually become violent. Sorry if this comes across as selfish, but shouldn’t Men’s Health Week be about how men can better themselves? Calling men “perpetrators” is deeply problematic. Stereotypes can’t be broken if people refuse to let them go. I would have expected something positive to be said about men. Or maybe they could encourage men to get help because you know, they’re a police group.

Imagine they posted a message on International Women’s Day saying “you should treat men better”. There would definitely be outrage…

The other reason I dislike this stuff is because I’m not a violent person, so this doesn’t even apply to me. This just feels very exclusionary. Men’s Health Week should be about all men. I imagine many others feel the same. We’re not all violent, so what is the point of this?

This whole thing reminds me an awful lot of that one time the UN made an International Men’s Day post thanking “male allies”…

Pretending they care about men's mental health while instantly dismissing male victims of domestic abuse. It's so transparent. Almost amazed they bothered to at least put the helpline for men at the bottom after unnecessarily framing it as completely unilateral in the text.

My rant

(please don't read this before reading their press release.)

They did something for men's health week and I'm trying to be grateful for that. But...

The lens I can't not view it through

I recently saw a facebook post from an old co-worker of mine that was something along the lines of "thanks for reaching out, I'm alright, I just miss my kids."

And for a bit of context to that (not that I have much), years ago, I was in the room, along with a bunch of ppl from work, and his kids, when his wife started attacking him, brutally. I don't think I want to get into the details of that attack, although the emotional shit she did would help explain why seeing this hit so hard.

I remember thinking at the time that he needed to get away from her. But she would probably get the kids if he did, (she hadn't hit them) and that I could understand why he'd risk the violence instead of that.

I'd been thinking, since then, that men shouldn't (noone should) have to choose between their own physical safety and their children.

And seeing his post bought up all that, as well as general feelings that aren't fully fleshed out about how unfair the family courts are for men, wondering how his kids are conceptualising everything, thinking of how wide, and systemic and bullshit this all is, how powerless we are (as individuals) in the face of it, and concern about how all of this is impacting his mental health (I read his status to mean 'not suicidal, just suffering') and the mental health of anyone else going through it.

Reading their media release

So it was with all this kicking around in my head that I stumbled on the Queensland police media release for "Men's health week" and to me it read a bit like: 'look after your mental health, by avoiding echo chambers online, so that you don't hit women. Don't hit women!'

and my mind is just screaming that men are killing themselves because of systemic issues in society like their contribution as a fathers being cut down to $$$, about impossible choices and lack of support systems and the police are making men's health week about how we can benefit women.

And for the men being abused... there's nothing, just no recognition at all, not even a throwaway line about it, not even considered.

At least that's how I'm looking at it with the primer I've got.

Which is why I need your help to see if I'm just not able to view it objectively right now, or to what level I'm not being objective or the things I'm missing.

Bonus Round - White Ribbon Workplace

For bonus points, at the bottom of their page they showed they were a "White Ribbon Workplace" as a link I clicked.

which uses words like:

ending men’s violence against women.

and includes lots of stats of female victims of domestic violence.

and men?

not a mention, unless it's as perpetrators, or people who could "speak up".

I'm in NSW not Queensland, but this whole thing is not feeling me with confidence about going to the police if I'm in that situation again.

The police have been making good gains in showing that they recognise both men and women as perpetrators of domestic violence lately (NSW police that is.) So I'd like to think that I should have called the police, and they would have helped. (I didn't back then, so I don't know.) But seeing things like this, it'd make me hesitant to call them if it happened again.

sounds like they are treating men's mental health as women's domestic violence awareness. they ought be ashamed of themselves.

if they wanted to focus on men's mental health in the context of domestic violence, they ought to have spoken about how domestic violence affects men's mental health, e.g. how women's violent and abusive behavior affects men.

In the early industrialization stage in UK, the charity for the unemployed and homelessness is to prison and toture them, so as to cure their laziness and force them to work.

And in some muslim community, if the husband abuse his wife, the wife should learn to listen and obey to the husband. Yet, they sometimes achowledge some extreme cases or the home abuses by husband as punishment are sometime unjust or disproportion.

It is worse that men nowsaday would be blamed unconditionally.

Honestly, I like it a lot. It’s full of some very important reminders. Self-empowerment at the detriment to others is not productive, when any gender does it. We don’t need to tear down women to help lift our brothers up. But after reading it a little more, I’m starting to disagree with myself. Is this reminder timely to the discussion? Poor mental health and poor support for it can lead people down a dangerous pipeline of radical ideas. But simply stating that ad nauseam, support does not provide.
