The idea that women working more and having less free time would make women happier is one of the biggest scams ever sold. Let’s face it, most men would quit working today if they didn’t need to work to provide. Several studies have shown that as women have taken on more work hours, they’ve become less happy, not more. (Again no great surprise there).

I read a great article years ago about how the Ford Foundation sold this idea as a way to increase the labor force and decrease wages. (The Ford Foundation was a big backer of feminism in this regard and funded many women’s studies programs).

My hunch about 2nd wave feminism was always that it was just a "rich man's trick" - male oligarchs replacing male workers with more obedient and less potentially rebellious females, also breaking down the middle-class nuclear family structure to create an atomized and vulnerable populace.

I am a fan of individual freedom. So it seems to me that a woman who wants to be a stay at home mom should be free to choose to do so, and a woman who wants to have a full time career should be free to choose to do so, and a woman who wants to do both should be free to take that load on.

There IS a problem though. When it was the norm for women to be stay at home moms, there weren't as many job opportunities available to them, so some women had to accept the stay at home mom lifestyle even if it wasn't their first choice. Now that women in the workforce is the norm, that has been flipped on its head. The entrance of women increased the labor supply which, as a matter of simple economics, pulled salaries down. Now two people must both have jobs to pull the kind of income that one person once could. Which means most men simply can't afford to fund the lifestyle of a stay at home mom. Which, in turn, means that many women who want to be stay at home moms don't have that as a realistic option, there just aren't enough wealthy men to go around. So they must either: settle for a very unattractive but wealthy man (which is still only sometimes even an option), or settle for a two-working-parent family, or be a single mom (assuming she can pull enough of an income to even afford that).

So the grim reality of economics means that women (much like men) can't have everything they want. A culture full of stay-at-home moms greatly restricts the options for women who want to be career-focused, and a culture full of career-focused women greatly restricts the options for women who want to be stay-at-home moms. In theory all these options are available right now, but in practice most people have to settle, in one way or another, because very few are born rich.

(And yes, there are other arrangements that women might want, I am just oversimplifying to make the general point clear).

Also, 'wage slave' is a communist slogan; there is nothing wrong with selling your work to a company. Male 'wage slaves' are ok, but female 'wage slaves' are not?
