People look for excuses for people they value. It says more than it should.

I try to stay away from people like you described, usually if I look at what else they've said I find it's better I never see their opinions again.

It’s the same old women don’t have agency argument which is essentially saying that when men to terrible things it’s because they willingly chose to do so, but when women do terrible things, they had no control over their actions.

Feminists use this argument to justify women’s wrong doings and to argue women shouldn’t be punished as harshly as men if at all.

Of course if one thinks about this argument, by the same logic, employers should be more reluctant to hire women and women shouldn’t be in positions of responsibility since they have less control over their actions. If one thinks about it, it’s an argument that is very belittling of women, claiming they are less capable of controlling their actions than men are.

It's so fashionable too. As years come and go women always get new trendy labels to couch their behavior in to avoid accountability. These labels become saturated with their sins and are discarded - but a new excuse is never far away.

Here in New Zealand its not even considered murder if the mother's victim is under 10 years old. They can (and do) use the defence of Infanticide, max sentence of 3 years and only available to women.

When women kill their babies, it is usually post partum depression. Hormones and stress.

When men kill their children and rest of their families, they are known as family annihilators. Usually older than babies. Also caused by stress.

Neither crimes should be excused. Murder is still murder.

Mental health conditions like postpartum psychosis are real and serious, but they cannot become a blanket excuse every time a woman commits a crime against a child. In law, insanity or diminished responsibility must be medically established with credible psychiatric evidence, not assumed because of gender. Accountability and compassion are not opposites; we can ensure proper mental health evaluation while also demanding due process and consequences where criminal intent is proved. Justice has to be gender-neutral, otherwise it stops being justice at all.

Just want to say something real quick:

Postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric illness. It has symptoms, including hallucinations, severe confusion, powerful delusions, shifting moods (from depression to ecstatic mania), and severe insomnia.

It primarily occurs in women who have experienced psychosis in the past, or who have bipolar disorder/a history of psychosis in the family. It occurs about a few days to a few weeks after birth.

It is dangerous and poses significant harm to a woman’s child, and occasionally to the woman herself. There are risk factors, but no known causes for it.

There is a difference between an abusive mother who hates her child and a woman suffering from a severe psychiatric illness. Please keep that in mind.

PPP is real, so is PPA (postpartum anxiety) and PPD (postpartum depression). The psychosis is probably the scariest of the three. My mom has a friend who's raising her granddaughter because her daughter got PPP that hasn't resolved and is living in a mental hospital.

My grandma had PPD very bad and also didn't resolve. She ended up becoming an alcoholic and abused my mom. Even tried to kill her several times. This was in the 1940s and 50s.

I think we gloss it because we’re closer to animal instincts and behaviors more often than we’d like to admit. Reflex on inadequate resources.

Grew up with many animals, my parents were encouraging my sisters in 4-h type things. Many times the female would just wipe a litter overnight, one time a rabbit did hers during the time it took to eat breakfast.

SIDS too, I think that’s the same resource thing with human women, or just straight up exhausted parent leading to fatal neglect, but you don’t tell distraught parents that, you tell her, “these tragedies happen.”
