It was a good attempt, but overall I was disappointed at her conclusions. She openly admits that women don't understand men, and that she doesn't understand them either, but then proceeds to diagnose them. She says things like that they don't have a lot of compassion for one another and see's that as a problem.

The issue is she's seeing men's issues through the lense of the things women want, and assuming they want the same thing. For example, as a woman she wants understanding and compassion, and see's the lack of that as a fundamental flaw in the way men operate. But male groups don't act that way, and that is on purpose.

She gets an "A" for effort, but ultimately fails by falling into her own solipsism. She falls into the feminist trap of speaking on behalf of men, and assuming she knows what's best for them... Without even asking them. She doesn't understand what men's needs and motivations are even though she was treated like one, because she's not one.

Read the book halfway. Had to stop. Everything was processed through a heavily biased feminist lens (she's gay, DUH). Even after experiencing the male condition, she still found a way to hamster the patriarchy, shaming men for objectifying strippers, and shit like that.

For me the best part was: After ending this project she went to mental institute because of depression she get from pretending being a man.

"Men are suffering; they need our understanding, they need our love."

The ending to this was very poignant to me.

I also like that she points out that being a woman feels like a privilege. It's never been lost on me how hard men have it in the dating scene and how incredibly unkind and condescending some women can be to the men who brave it. I am going to have to get this book. Thanks for the post.

One thing women need to understand is for men the teasing, giving a hard time ball busting is how to show each other we are friends and are comfortable with each other. Men learn the "no fly" zones over time (what areas are off limits) and work each other over on the other areas. Women see this and cannot understand how we can be apparently verbally abusive to each other and be friends.

Here is why-

I can say these "mean" things to you because you know I am your friend, I am not out to get you and I respect you.

It's someone you don't know you can't do this with. You can tell your best buddy he's a stupid idiot- you can't tell your boss, some stranger without the probability of a bad outcome. It's only for they guys you know and are comfortable with. And if we start teasing you it often means we now trust you more.
