TL:DR went to a wedding for the first time since becoming RP. Shit was even more bogus and lopsided than I remember. I sat back and enjoyed watching the train wreck, and smiled to myself that it won’t ever be me

What the fuck, y’all? Attended my first wedding since freeing my mind, roughly 2 years back. Normally, I wouldn’t bother since I have consistently failed at the bridesmaid game and my time is much better spent elsewhere. This happened to be a close family friend’s wedding, and so I agreed to attend as a favor to my folks. The evening was…educational. I will be calling the couple “Dave” and “Jane.”

What a sexist, artificial, crazy, and idiotic affair the whole thing was. Having become TRP-minded (plus a healthy pre-wedding bake), I actually saw a wedding for the first time in my life. Before TRP, I attended weddings and had been conditioned to feel “Awwww! True Love!”

This was a surreal experience, brahs. I learned several very important things from my evening. More importantly, I was in the right mindset and mood to engage in a “then vs. now” self-critical analysis. I will divide these observations into two sections below. First, “big fancy weddings are fucking bullshit.” Second, “societal convention and modern expectations make a successful marriage nearly impossible.” Some of these topics might be well-worn territory.

Big Fancy Weddings Are Fucking Bullshit.

  1. $50 dollars a person for dinner and drinks. Fuck. That. Noise. Over 200 people in attendance. Church, Venue rental, DJ, Tuxes, Dresses, Flowers, Invitations, all that shit cost extra. I bet the total cost of this wedding was $40K. and it wasn’t even fun for the bride or groom.

  2. Most guests were parents’ friends and barely knew bride and groom – myself included. So these kids just getting started out could have had $25K-$45K of seed money to start a business, buy a house, fund retirement, spend on something useful. Instead they got a fancy party that lasted 5 hours. Short-sighted thinking like this is why, on a national scale, we are in a great deal of economic trouble. Why isn’t “planning ahead” a mandatory curriculum for every grade-level? Oh right, because if suddenly human beings started worrying for the future the global economy (as it currently exists) would fall apart.

  3. Churches in general are fucking bullshit. I think if there were such a thing as an unseen and possibly invisible creator-of-all-things, that/those being(s) would (hopefully) be entirely too fucking busy to worry about helping enforce Dave and Jane’s “deal to not fuck other people and split their finances.” The very notion that paying some guy in a gilded building to say magic words and sprinkle magic water on you can somehow curry favor with the supernatural is goddamn crazysauce.

  4. Wearing a tie is bullshit. I ain’t the one getting fucking married. I wear a tie to work every goddamn day. Fuck you. I didn’t wear jeans and a tee. Be happy you got any effort.

  5. Running out of food is bullshit. Unless Jesus was in personal attendance, don’t skimp on extra fish and loaves, motherfuckers.

  6. Laws criminalizing consumption of cannabis are bullshit. Not related to the wedding, but merited inclusion. But for ganja, I wouldn’t have freed my mind. I guess that is why weed is illegal.

  7. “Its HER wedding” instead of “its THEIR wedding” is completely not bullshit. Dave was a prop.

Societal convention and modern expectations make a successful marriage nearly impossible.

  1. Religious nuptuals in general are fucking bullshit. By way of example, the minister said (and I am paraphrasing) – “Dave, you gotta remember to not be complacent. You have to keep doing all the little things that you did to win her heart. You gotta take care of Jane and treat her right. You have to be responsible and loyal, and a good man…. Jane and Dave, we will now exchange rings.” WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK?!? Why didn’t this motherfucking asshole in a white collar read Jane the same riot act about being loyal and responsible and not getting fat?! Oh yeah… because Jane isn’t expected to do shit… by the church or anybody else. He literally spent 5 good minutes telling Dave all this shit he has to do, and doesn’t say word fucking one to her. A very sad, very poignant reflection of the way it really is, y’all.

I wasn’t surprised by the sentiment reflected in the marriage ceremony. TRP taught me better than to expect anything different. Though I did laugh aloud at how blatant the one-sidedness was in this particular ceremony. Were it me up there, I would have interrupted – “Whoa whoa whoa, now tell her that she is going to get ditched and replaced fast like quick if she balloons up, disrespects me in any way, spends too much of my money on stupid shit, acts like a petulant child too often, fucks around in any way, lies in any way, throws shit, or tries to condition our kids to be anything other than stone-cold alpha. IDGAF what your dad thinks, he isn’t marrying your ass and can shut the fuck up or get knocked the fuck out.”

Thankfully, it wasn’t me up there. I credit TRP for that too.

  1. Toasts are Rad. Wedding toasts are bullshit. Everybody talks about how lucky the groom is. He snagged a good one. He finally stepped up and made it honest. Seriously? This dude just walked a fucking plank over the unknown, don’t make it worse. Does anybody say, Jane – you are so fucking lucky to have met this guy that is going to sacrifice ten years of extra life due to the stress of working hard enough to keep you fed, housed, clothed, and entertained? Nope. Anybody say, Jane – this dude is fit as fuck, and traded in fresh hot ass for the next 20 years as the ultimate (misguided) gesture to make you feel special and happy – don’t abuse it? Nope. Hardly anyone bothers to think about how Jane just got the fucking deal of a lifetime, including a sweet golden parachute. I really appreciated the irony for the first time. Dave has literally just voluntarily given up some of the best perks of being a single, affluent, fit dude on a gamble that the alternative will make him happier and more fulfilled. That is high-stakes.

Do you think that all my friends and family would congratulate me on making a prudent and wise life-decision if I laid down 3/4ths of my net wealth on the pass line at the Bellagio and said “hand me the dice!”? They most certainly would not congratulate me because gambling with stakes that high is monumentally stupid and risky. Yet that is precisely what a marriage is – a monumentally stupid and risky gamble, with cash, with children, with family, and with happiness. I think the divorce rate and losing a pass line bet are statistically close enough that the analogy fits. Fuck you if you want to argue over a few percentage points, nerd.

In conclusion, I doubt I will be attending any more weddings or participating in the institution of marriage. Also, thanks to all the TRP contributors that freed my fucking mind, so that I may see the world for what it really is. It’s like having fucking cheat codes.
