Been lurking here for a while. Young college dude who's trying not to get myself into a catch 22 situation when I get married. I've been with my girl for about a year and a half now. We get along great and she treats me well. However, recently I have been facing some things in my life like family issues, immense pressure at my summer job (toxic boss), academic struggles, and trying to figure out what I'll do when I graduate. All of these struggles are happening simultaneously and I cannot handle dealing with the emotions all at the same time.

My solution for this situation has been to simply just shut off my emotions and get shit done. Because what's separates the boys from the men is doing what you set out to do even when you don't feel like it. I want to start my own business, graduate, and get through this summer without getting fired. In order to handle everything, shutting off my emotions allows me to have control over my actions and not be swayed by stress, anger, or a feeling of overwhelming sadness. I proceeded to tell my girlfriend about this because I wanted her to know where I was at in my life. She could also tell something was different about me before I told her.

She proceeded to say that she understood why I was doing this and was neutral about the situation, but she also said that this scares her. She has, in the past said that she does not know what I'm capable of because I tend to not be emotional to begin with. I don't know how to respond to something like that because I'm not going to be more emotional so that I don't scare her. What I'm hoping to accomplish requires an immense amount of discipline and focus that cannot be achieved if I keep letting my emotions dictate my actions. I was just wondering if any of you older gentlemen have ever faced something like this and how you handled it?
