Thanksgiving Megathread!

I'm hosting for the first time! In my new house! I am STOKED!

I made a point to ask everyone to bring something. The people my age are bring beer and wine, while the more seasoned guests are bringing the classic dishes from my husband and I'm childhoods. I'm going to smoke a turkey and bake one, so here's to hoping they turn out good!

I borrowed an airpot from a friend - I'm going to mull hot cider ahead of time, and then offer it with warm mugs and optional rum ;)

I've been cooking the meal at for my parents for years now because I love to cook. I like to chop all the veggies the night before, and chop up the bread for stuffing and leave it in the oven overnight to dry out. I use a ton of crockpot! One to keep gravy warm, one to make mashed potatoes in, one to cook corn and cream cheese in (I dunno why we make this. So simple, so good!) And we always serve buffet style - shuffling plates of food around at a dinner table of 12+ people is a pain in the booty!

I'm making a veggie tray, salmon dip, and some cheese and crackers for snacks. I like to have snacks and drinks for people since I serve dinner a little late. It's gives everyone a chance to mingle and chat.

And I'm SO EXCITED for sandwiches the next day! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday!

This year the entire family will be at my parents. And we are exchanging gifts for the first time in years (the siblings kinda stopped buying each other gifts while we all settled into adulthood). Shopping for my nieces has been so much fun. And while I can't wait to host my own thanksgiving one year I know it makes my mom really happy to host still and have all her girls home.

The holidays in general really stress me out. Way too much extro'ing from those trying to prove how awesome their hosting skills are or how close their families are. I'm not about that life.

That said, yay all the black friday sales!!!

I'm going to our friends house (L is army gone), they're deep frying a turkey and I'm super excited. I'm bringing booze and mixers. Though I'm most looking forward to their fluffball of a dog, he's just so adorable.

For years now, I have been the official bread baker for Thanksgiving. I use a passed-down recipe from my husband's grandmother because she can no longer make it (arthritis). Other than that, we just show up with wine, and I stand in the kitchen helping with anything I can.

But if any of you need a last minute bread recipe, this one is really good! It will just take me a bit to type it out.

Normally I cook something - last year I made onion gratin, which is a BIG hit. And it is seriously the simplest recipe!! Little work with a huge payoff! I also made a green bean casserole topped with bacon.

However, this year we're celebrating at my in-laws, and Husband's little sister is doing the cooking(and pie and cheesecake baking!!!!)! PLUS, I'm 39 weeks pregnant, so I'll be too pregnant to contribute and just get to reap the benefits of everyone else's hard work :) I was really looking forward to making this roasted veggie antipasto, but little SIL is really taking care of everything, and is very excited to do so. Perhaps next year :)

This year we are going back to our family roots on the meal, and I owe my mom a big "I love you so much hug".

The hug part:

R's parents are...objectively bad parents. They have two sons, R is youngest. For whatever reason (I have theories but we will never know)....they don't like R very much..at all.

So for Thanksgiving they already flew to NY where his brother lives to spend the holidays with him and his wife. R was not invited. R was 'invited' to stay home alone and take care of the dog. My mom (horrified) insisted R spends the holidays with us in NV (where my parents live), he can bring the dog. R's dad says no, the dog can't come around our dogs. My mom says, fine, you two can stay at the neighbors empty house. They won't mind and you can keep R's dog there. R's dad says no. After all, dog > son. My mom says, FINE, I'll pay to board the dog but your son isn't spending Thanksgiving alone in a cold house. R's dad says no. My mom comes unglued (privately) and says "fuck these horrible people who don't love their child, let alone an amazing man like R who I only wish your brother was more like - he's not spending Thanksgiving alone, we will all eat on the floor of your new apartment surrounded by boxes if that's what has to happen".

So....that's what we are doing!!! My mom and step-dad are driving to CA to come to us! R and I put the boogie on moving and have done more in 3 days than most people do in 10. Our apartment is almost completely put together and I haven't slept in days. I feel like death but god damnt we are having Thanksgiving as a family. So yeah, I owe my mom a giant hug.

Getting Back to Roots

My mom used to single-handedly cook lavish feasts for 30+ people and host an extravagant Thanksgiving meal everyone had a blast at. One year she came home, slammed fondue pots and raw meat on the table and said "cook your own damn food", and my immediate family enjoyed Thanksgiving alone and watched South Park all night. It was the best Thanksgiving we ever had.

We did that for probably 5 years and then she started cooking (smaller) feasts again. This year because they are traveling and we won't have the kitchen to accommodate cooking like that...we are doing fondue and South Park! I don't care how it sounds, it's my absolute favourite and I'm really looking forward to it.

I am making this for Thanksgiving. OMG OMG OMG SO YUMMM. I love the pioneer woman!!!!!

EDIT: The casserole was a HUGH hit. Everyone loved it and said I should make it whenever I come visit again hahahah! THANK YOU REE!!!!!
