I always like to tell a woman this story whenever they like to debate the equality of a male and female's physical prowess.

The "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match.

A fourth event dubbed a "Battle of the Sexes" took place during the 1998 Australian Open between Karsten Braasch and the Williams sisters. Venus and Serena Williams, aged 17 and 16 respectively, had claimed that they could beat any male player ranked below 200, so Braasch, then ranked 203rd, challenged them both. The matches took place on court number 12 in Melbourne Park. Braasch first took on Venus and beat her 6–2. He then played Serena and won 6–1. Braasch said afterwards, "500 and above, no chance." He added that he had played like someone ranked 600th in order to keep the game "fun".

Also.

Braasch was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centred around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager."

The way the article reads it appears the woman won more money than the male "winner" for running a slower pace.

How in the world is the gender challenge price much greater than the actual prize money?

I have a feeling there would be an uproar about lack of equality if a man won despite the delayed start.

When I was racing Triathlons in the early 2000s I heard about a "women's only" triathlon which was sponsored by Danskin if I remember correctly (workout wear for women). The funny thing about this series was that they had people in the water with pool noodles and other "flotation devices" to help the women along and they had a designated last finisher because they didn't want the women to "feel bad".

I laughed when I heard that and the woman who told me that was actually upset, not at me, but at the entire concept because it so goes against the idea of Triathlon.

Then a few years later it suddenly turned into a whole "badge of honor" for people to do Tris, completely and utterly ignoring the rules (e.g. no drafting, no riding side by side etc.).

The killer for me was in an officially sanction Triathlon Ontario race where an entire fucking peleton was going over the bike course and steamrolled me on a climb. I pulled over afterwards and asked one of the marshalls why he hadn't pulled that group over. He laughed at me.

At that point I had it. I rolled back to the change area, found the head marshall and reported myself for having crossed a double yellow line, an instant disqualification, (I did cross when I went around that peleton on a flat section where they blocked the entire lane yacking about something or the other). She laughed in my face and when I looked at the race results later I was listed as DNF, not as DQ. That was the last race I ever did that was Triathlon Ontario sanctioned.

Funnily enough, the Subaru Triathlon series had similar complains about them and actually briefly parted ways with them. The two years they ran it by themselves they had marshalls out on the road on bike and they had people stand down for an immediate 15 minute penalty.

Now to be fair, the cheating was both men and women, but the women clearly benefitted more from it. I saw more than one couple (who had arrived together) with the woman drafting behind the guy.

In the end I stopped racing because everything that was cool about the sport was basically sold out to the idea of "getting more people into the sport". You now have drafting and "cheating" everywhere with people happily calling themselves "Triathlete" when most of them couldn't even finish under their own power.

At least the ultra running scene so far has been void of this kind of behaviour. I guess it's a bit hard to cheat / brag when you have to run across a few mountain ranges all by yourself.

Along these lines I looked for the world records for raw bench presss (assistance gear makes it largely a different lift).

The "womans" record holder is April Mathis at 430 pounds

Amane Gobena the girl, age 31, won in 2 hours 27 minutes 37 seconds

Gebo Burka, the man, age 26, won in 2 hours 10 minutes 37 seconds

The girl was given a head start of 17 minutes 41 seconds.

This means that Gebo Burka was within 5 seconds of beating an asinine handicap and his rightful take of $50k

I feel bad for the guy.

This seems fair and fine to me. Someone set up a gender challenge, which is an acknowledgement that a woman cannot hope to compete with a man in a marathon.

All in all, because the athletics done by men attract a much greater audience because they are much more spectacular, you can rest assured that the male winner will have far greater career earnings than his female counterpart. That she gets a little bonus for doing relatively well is nothing to soil your panties about.

By the way, the world record for women, set by the British Paula Radcliffe, is 2.13-something, which is insanely impressive. She’s sort of infamous in the UK for taking a shit in stride during a race, but I just think that shows she’s got the eye of the tiger.

I finally got it.

It was a bonus prize for the first man or woman who crossed the line. The gave a handicap to the women so that it would be a 'race' instead of $50,000 for some dude the crossed first.

Nothing to see here people, just a handicap to make a race more interesting.
