Yes. Even a very poor person who has sex they don't want to buy groceries, I don't think they were raped--I just think it's really sad.

Consent is a two part concept: legal and moral.

Legally you can buy consent only in places where prostitution is legal.

Morally, from a humanist POV, consent can never actually be bought.

From a base level "kill or be killed, it's the law of the jungle" yeah, consent can be bought and it's even a mating strategy for some species.

If a person is willing to have sex not because (s)he is really into it, but because there's some tangible benefit attached to it, it's not rape (absent the threat of force).

I think that there's an argument to be made for poverty coercing sex workers, but that argument applies to all forms of labour. Once you go down that rabbit hole everything that impoverished people do for money is coerced. At that point we're just critiquing capitalism which isn't very useful when the issue at hand is prostitution.

I can maybe see the beginings of an argument in the circumstance of a prostitute being so impoverished that they cannot even afford basic necessities. But IMO even then, they are still consenting, and I would even argue its for the best. If the choice is between suck a dick or starve, its better to suck that dick and have a meal then it is to not be afford the choice and starve to death.

Ive seen people trying to even make the argument that consent cant be bought even among middle class or above. Most of the people making this argument think that no one would be a prostitute if they didnt have to be, and that since they "have" to be prostitutes, it negatrs their consent. But that argument falls apart when you realise the only way to ever make prostitution completely voluntary, you would have to give everyone enough means to never work again in their life.

Most people do not like their jobs, yet we do not consider them slaves because they chose to work over being homeless.

The only difference between cutting someone's hair for money and sucking someone's dick for money is the subjective morality attached to it.

Consent is the most fucky thing ever.

You can go to a woman and menace to punch her in the face and she'll accept to have sex with you because being beaten is apparently worse than having a dick in your vagina. Women might even consent to sex just because they perceive an imaginary threat coming from you.

But then you'll be prosecuted for rape and it's the "worst thing you could do to a woman".

You can't make sense of any of this consent bullshit frankly.
