Background: My husband and I share the majority of our friends; most are, of course, other couples. I've become good friends with most of his single friends, though, and we have game nights often where the wives host at their house and invite everyone over. Everything has been really great except for the fact that I have lost all of my female friends from school and college due to politics so I find myself existing through my husband's friends solely. It feels lonely most of the time because of that (we always hang out as a couple).
My husband has been very supportive of me finding more friends. The issue is that there isn't much in my city (Vegas) past clubs, bars, Strip spots, or related venues that aren't very supportive of my lifestyle preferences and conservative leaning. It doesn't help that my favorite hobby is male-dominated (video games). Most of the geek/nerd venues are overrun with extremely liberal crowds as well.
Here's the issue: anytime I make friends online (gaming or otherwise), they are male 99% of the time. And as soon as they find out I'm female, it all goes downhill. Inappropriate comments, weird messages, and just awkwardness all around. It's like a switch flips and they lose their minds. I had a ton of male friends when I was single, but now I just realized they were never really friends but rather "waiting in the wing". I guess I just ignored the behavior since I was single and wanted friends regardless of the quality.
Most of my male friends from the past are very liberal; strangely, they are the worst violators of inappropriate behavior. I have gotten so upset at some DMs that I have handed the phone to my husband to help me address them. This has happened out of the blue with people I have known for a decade plus. It has seriously blindsided me several times into tears.
Which brings me specifically to the main question: is it even possible to have male friends in a completely platonic way? Or is there always some underlying romantic/sexual energy that will eventually unleash itself in the worst of ways? Is it even worth it to try?
