It would appear to me then, that traditional social structures did indeed recognize these things and tried to control for them.

Even speaking as a liberal, it's clear that traditional social structures were intelligent mechanisms. In most cases they can only be disagreed with on moral principle, where one might value individual freedom over the common good.

The older I get the more I realise how fundamentally and innately flawed humanity is. The tabula rasa underpinning liberal thought seems increasingly untenable to me.
