Alimony is also about getting her back on her feet. If she doesn't have an adequate education or job experience, it's going to be difficult for to find an appropriate job. Alimony is meant to be rehabilitative in many states. Property division is moreso what recognizes the contributions to the marriage. If husband and wife both agreed to a nanny or maid, it was a mutual decision. It doesn't mean she didn't contribute to the marriage in a way that was mutually agreeable to him.

On the face of it, it seems ludicrous. I tend to think that in this day and age of women's liberation, arguing entitlement to the husband's money particularly in the form of alimony is getting harder and harder to defend on an equality level.

At the same time, who's to say that she didn't 'contribute' to him building his fortune in ways other than caring for the children and house. I'm sure they find many ways to argue that more abstract contributions were made in court.

Usually wives of the rich are socialites. Their participation at the red carpet, fundraisers and other high publicized events is a must. They have to be a fitness program and diet to look their best. Socialize with other high society people to network takes time away from kids. I don't agree with that lifestyle but I wouldn't claim that they were sitting on their asses or shopping all day.

Because alimony is about allowing a wife to get back in her feet after so many years unemployed. Even if she didn't actually do many chores, she is still in that position.

The assumption is that the wife contributed to the relationship by providing support to the husband and his career while sacrificing her own career prospects. If the hired help takes care of all the chores around the house, then it is on hubby to get the bitch out the door and into the job market or back to school or something to make something of herself. That, and no prenup? It's his own damn fault given the current environment.

A few years back a bunch of lawyers in Canada prepared a government paper to try and rationalize spousal support payments (ie. alimony).

The (unofficial) "guideline" was something like 1% to 2% of the income differential paid for a number of years from 50% to 100% of the length of the relationship.

A woman in that kind of a situation is extremely far removed from your average, suburban mother who had taken 5 years out to raise his three kids and needs support while she updates her qualifications.
