There was a news story near my hometown recently where parents were calling for a teacher to be fired because she had expressed racist views on Facebook. (I'm not sure what ever became of it.)

Were the parents being bigoted? After all, it's none of their business what this woman thinks or says outside of school, right?

The fact is, this woman is responsible for teaching children from all walks of life, including black and Hispanic children. Parents of these children not wanting them taught by a racist, whose views could very well color her interactions with her students, are not being bigots. They're being responsible and looking out for their kids' best interest.

Similarly, a parent has every right to raise an eyebrow when their female student is being taught by someone who subscribes to a philosophy that says that women/girls are morally and intellectually inferior.

I get that you're one of the more moderate RPers, but that is how your movement looks to people from the outside looking in. You have to know that by now.

It's not just that they disagree with her views. It's that her views could very likely have a negative impact on their kids if they remain in her classroom

No. It is because they have prejudged that the mere presence of those personal views in her head means there would be an effect on their child ... With no evidence this is actually case. Just because they assume that "a person who has made a racist remark in private" can't be trusted to act professionally concerning her students.

The woman literally thinks that blacks are an inferior race and openly stated on her Facebook page that segregation should be reinstated. (I'll dig up the article if you don't believe me.) Black parents not wanting their students being taught by such a person are being bigots for thinking a person with those opinions might treat their kids unfairly? You can't be serious.

Oh no. I believe you.

But people have to be prepared to accept what their actions make them.

She has a right to her views.

They have a right to distrust her professionally due to them.

But acting on that... Based on their beliefs... Is what the term bigot was invented to refer to.

Now. The left in general have made that a very bad word indeed.

They are going to have to shoulder the stigma of that word in order to do what they deem best for their children

In EXACTLY the same way that... Say.... A republican removing their children from an Obama voting teacher must. Or an evangelical removing their child from an atheist teacher must. My wife is a primary school teacher, and has a red flair.

She's not an RPW, but she's RP like me.

I know that there is nothing about how we handle our personal married life that in any way interferes with how she deals with male and female children in her job. She's devoted to teaching them well, as many teacher are.

The idea that people like you would hound her at her job, or act precious about your children, interfering and disrupting their education and generally acting like an ass about views you disagree with ..... for something which is nothing other than her personal views on her marriage.... is bigotry.

You're acting like an intolerant bigot. Just as the religious parents treat the atheist teachers. And the republican bigots treat the Obama voting teachers. And so on..... It's just THIS TIME the good old lefties have found themselves in this position.... And in this hypothetical they are acting no better than the bigots they despise.

Except for you guys it's OK, because theyre right so it is in your eyes ok to do this because it's ok to do it WHEN YOURE RIGHT.

I think i explained myself pretty well. some personal leanings, including religion, etc are fine by me. I know those things will not be damaging to a kid. A republican teacher? Who cares? a primary student will not be suffering because their teacher voted for trump, but a primary school child could very well be affected if their teacher is sexist or racist, especially because primary school is such a crucial developmental stage. That is not okay with me.

For some it does, for other it does not (Dalrocks place is full of evangelical Christians who want a traditional home, for example... As is RPW). Is it ? Because I don't see RP as a hate group. But I do see many religions as hate groups (I too am an atheist). Yet I don't pull my kids because the teacher is an evangelical christian, or even a racist, in their personal lives..... So long as they act professionally as a teacher.

Many teachers in London, where I am from.... Are South African ex-pats... I am assuming many have "quite fruity" views on race as a result of that. Yet I've never audited or demanded an investigation of a teacher. I'm happy to let South Africans teach my kids too. And evangelicals. And teachers from all walks of life, and positions I disagree with, and positions I think are factually wrong.

Hell. I think feminists are wrong, wrong, wrong.... And they stand in relation to sexuality much as RP does from the opposite side... i specifically said that it was probably fine if they kept it to themselves and acted like a professional, so your outburst was completely unnecessary (and fuck you for that comparison). it's not a witch hunt to decide who does or doesn't teach my kids, and really doesn't affect the teacher at all.

i have seen posts on MRP and red pill parenting where they talk about young children in a way that makes me really uncomfortable, however. so yes, i would need to observe the environment that my children are in and take whatever measures necessary to protect them. some people can keep their personal views separate from their professions and some can't; i would have no interest in taking risks when it comes to who my very young children are spending time with and receiving education from. i would feel the same about an extremely conservative/religious female teacher; it's not just TRP that would raise my concerns.

They too would not "have felt comfortable" letting "abolitionists" teach their kids given "abolitionist material" they have read ... No it isn't. The point is 'is someone who thinks badly of the group my young child belongs to teaching my young child? And if so, is this person containing their personal views to an extent where it isn't affecting my young child's treatment.'

If I had a rambunctious son who was bright but not good at sitting still for a long time you better believe I'd look further into it if I found out his kindergarten teacher was a radfem. Hell, I'd do it even if he was good at sitting still. Radfems aren't known for their favourable views of males and I would definitely feel disconcerted. Just like I'd feel if I found out that the person teaching my daughter didn't believe that girls were as intellectually capable as boys.

This isn't witch-hunting, you goof, it's people being concerned about the competence and fairness of people who are teaching their children. If the radfem and the RP kindergarten teachers are capable of keeping their personal views out of their teaching and interactions with the kids then hey, result! But you better believe I'd want to be sure that that was the case. That's all. I wouldn't try to get anyone fired or run wailing to the school board or any of that, it doesn't have to be anything more than quietly making sure your kid isn't being treated unfairly.

Would you seriously not blink an eye if you found out that the person teaching your son thought boys were inherently less intelligent and capable than their female peers? Or that your son was inherently violent and sexual? I mean, wouldn't you want to make sure this wasn't affecting how she taught the kids? Without anyone needing to be stuffed in an oven or hung in the town center, that is?

Involved parents =/= parents who believe right from the start that the teacher is incapable of doing their job.

Believing a teacher might be prejudiced against students belonging to a certain group because they are known for making comments online against that group isn't "believing right from the start that the teacher is incapable of doing their job." The parents in this hypothetical aren't randomly targeting the teacher for no reason. They have reason to believe that something might be amiss, and want to sit in on the class to make sure everything is okay. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Did the parents who asked for lesson plans, etc. single you out, or were they involved to a similar degree in many aspects of their kids' education?

A mixture of both. Most were just involved parents, but some didn't think that my teaching was up to snuff (this was during my first year, and guess what? They were right.) Others were really skeptical of my ability because I was really young (newly 22) when I started teaching. That's not them being "bigoted" against me for my age, it's them making sure their kids are in good hands for the 90 minutes a day they spent in my classroom. Trust but verify.

as far as i can tell, you said it was bigoted to remove my children from the teacher's class immediately without doing anything else or knowing anything more than his views outside of the classroom, which i already explained wasn't the case; i would observe the teaching environment on my own to determine how to proceed, and whether or not anything needed to be done to ensure my children were in a positive environment. this would also include a discussion with my children, to gauge how they felt and what they were learning (and a discussion with the school administration only if i felt it necessary). of course i would be taking steps to make sure that my concerns are warranted; if you can't see that, you're choosing to ignore it for the sake of your own argument (an argument which is getting pretty old, by the way).

No, I totally understand that train of thought. That what I think/say could bear consequences. The consequence of losing my job simply because the parents of a student I teach found my username on a forum in a particular category discussing a topic they happen to disagree with, however, is ludicrous. Funny how you should tell me I need to be taught free speech. How do you get by being so insecure? Are you just going to tattle to whatever authority or employer who'll listen that so-and-so thinks this-and-that and should be fired for it. Tattle makes it sound like the one being tattled on is guilty of something wrong. Any self-respecting person would hang up the phone on you. Free speech is free speech and no one should be made afraid to speak their mind. Whether it's offensive or not. Grow some skin.
