Good question.

The real question is - what led the men to come up with something like that?

The answer is - the female propensity to sexually reject men who are into them and loving towards them. This strategy is meant to limit the amount of love given to a woman, in order to prevent a decrease in the amount of sex she'll be up for.

Sex for men is the pathway to love. Having sex makes a man more loving. A man being more loving, causes the woman to not want as much sex, which in turn causes the man to feel punished for being loving. Men did not gleefully come up with this idea. On the contrary, this goes directly against the male nature to be more loving towards women post sex bonding. Withholding love is a calculated and extremely difficult move on behalf of men to avoid a DB.

Thankfully, women have the much more pleasant solution in their hands. To reward acts of love, kindness and generosity from your man with more desire and more sex. To not punish the behaviors that you want more of. Sure, it takes thought and purposeful action. However, it's way better than the alternative.

My husband is naturally more reserved and private with his emotions than I am, but I've learnt the ways that he shows his love and that he is very affectionate in his own way. His shows of love and affection tend to be more practical, and I love him for that.

If he was overbearing with his emotions I would find that annoying. Likewise, if he deliberately withheld affection from me to meet some silly rule I'd be turned off.

I think that men who are already masculine and attractive don't need to bother themselves with these things. They come naturally to them.

By all means, find a man that gives equal or greater affection to you, then report back here about whether it decreased your desire for him. I believe that a woman cannot maintain love and desire for a man indefinitely, no matter the circumstances. It’s just my anecdotal belief though, so take it as such.

It is a strategy for men, and therefore not of much use to women to even think about.

As RPW, we should be aware that most men are NATURALLY less effusive with their affection than women are, so we should make sure not to get caught up in notions of whether or not he shows his love in 'acceptable' ways or amounts. A good man won't be 'stingy' with his love, but he probably will express it in different ways than a woman would (and that is a good thing).

Anyone who follows a rule like that is stupid. Give as much love and affection as you feel and as you think/know your partner wants. People are individuals, certain thinks work for some couples other things don't

I think it's holding men to a HIGHER standard than they naturally are. Men tend to be less lovey with their emotions, after all.

You mentioned a "rule" that somebody came up with, but you didn't provide very many details about the particular situation you are dealing wtih.

If you feel you are chasing your man, or getting zero affection from him, that doesn't sound so good, unless it's a temporary thing, perhaps because he's dealing with extra stress at work, etc.

But yes, if your affection is not reciprocated, you might back off a bit, not as a form of manipulation, but just to give the other person breathing room for the moment. Sometimes men need to be alone or be extra focused, for an hour, or for a day, in order to deal with a problem. In an of itself, that doesn't mean that he doesn't love you.

But if he never shows you affection over a period of time, that suggests that something else is going on.
