Kaley Cuoco is an actress who stars in 'The Big Bang Theory' and has a new movie coming out. She was interviewed by the magazine Redbook, asked whether she was a feminist, and stated:

"Is it bad if I say no? It's not really something I think about," she mused. "Things are different now, and I know a lot of the work that paved the way for women happened before I was around. ... I was never that feminist girl demanding equality, but maybe that's because I've never really faced inequality."

"It makes me feel like a housewife," she said. "I love that. I know it sounds old-fashioned, but I like the idea of women taking care of their men. I'm so in control of my work that I like coming home and serving him. My mom was like that, so I think it kind of rubbed off."

There was the expected backlash/outrage from Twitter feminists (see link below for some examples), prompting the following apology:

"I'm completely blessed and grateful that strong women have paved the way for my success along with many others. I apologize if anyone was offended. Anyone that truly knows me, knows my heart and knows what I meant."

Is feminism just as relevant for Millenials (Kaley is 29) as it was for Boomer and Gen X women (and the generations before them, of course)?

  • How do you feel about the Twitter backlash?

On Twitter, feminists put forward the "feminism is about choice" line. Yet, I can't help but feel that part of the reason that Kaley's comments prompted such an extreme reaction from the Twitterati is because she clearly enjoys and has purposefully adopted traditional gender roles. Do you think she would have prompted such a backlash if she had said "I'm not a feminist" but added that the usual feminist boilerplate about being "independent".

Is there really a place in the feminist movement for women who are very traditional? It seems like a lot of people feel Kaley should still ID as a feminist despite her personal feelings regarding men and relationships. What does feminism offer a woman like Kaley who is very traditional?

Feminists and TBP, on a personal level: how do you feel about women voluntarily adhere to traditional gender roles. Could you see yourself being close friends or valorizing a woman who chooses to dedicate her life to "taking care" (in the sense that Kaley used that phrase, to indicate domesticity, not taking care of someone who is extremely ill) a male significant other?
