NASA has been a downhill trip...

Space Shuttle was a flop. Caused by bureaucracy and engineers with academic rather than practical applications skills...

Sectionalized rocket engines were known to be problematic in the 50's due to leakage at the joints...

So what did they do? used rubber O-rings where any backyard motorcycle mechanic would have known you needed a copper head gasket.

Then they had the tiles problem...

And no spares or adhesives on board...

The politicization of NASA is a large part of why it hasn't done shit in the last 20 years, at least compared to it's earlier days. If anything, it's regressed to the point that they have to rely on other countries and to some extent the private sector to even get off-world.

Every time I hear a story about NASA these days, it's not about what frontier they've pushed back, or what new technology they've brought to bear, it's some puff piece about some sci-fi bullshit that's never going to happen that was clearly drummed up by the marketing people to try and justify their existence so their budget doesn't get cut.
