This is highly dependent on which province you live in. Common law doesn't exist in Quebec in any sense. In Ontario, you're only entitled to half of joint possessions, not finances unlike in marriage. Alimony, yes. Assuming your common law partner hasn't paid into the house, they have no claim on it so if you want them paying for household expenses it's best to create a rental agreement so they're treated as a tenant, not as someone you're joining household finances with. I can't really say much about the other provinces other than iirc they're worse.

A lot of this can be mitigated i.e. waiving alimony with a common law agreement and a separation agreement both far more likely to hold up in court than a pre-nup, although similar to a pre-nup if there's kids involved there is some gambling.

Most Canadians, importantly men are completely unaware of these laws. So again, there's a dice roll of "does my ex-common law partner even know these laws exist?" Plenty of Canadians are unaware of how common law exactly works and the ramifications and as such don't end up filing taxes correctly i.e. provincial and national time requirements for common law status are often different.

Not only in canada. Not this radically, but we have similar laws in hungary. But that requires 1 year of living together and also at least one children for alimony. And no marriage. I guess this is the reaction of the state to the men refusing to marry. When you get used to playing by their rules they'll just change the rules to screw you over for women's easy votes.

If you live in hungary where the constitution is radically modified every other week, you quickly learn that counting on the law means almost nothing. Also judges can interpret the existing law however they want. If the law is in your favor but they want to punish you. And I am telling this as a law school student.

Yes it’s “true” but far from automatic or expected. She would need to sue in court and establish not only why she qualifies for it (cohabiting, mingled finances, financial interdependence, presenting selves as an exclusive long term couple), but also a need for it.

You’d be hard pressed to show much case law that awards the girlfriend alimony of any amount for any significant period of time. I’m sure it exists but likely it’s from common law couples together for 20+ years, not a year into shacking up together.

Common law is not the same as marriage in Canada.

Still, best way to avoid the risk is to avoid the risk and never live together or share bank accounts

It varies by province, in mine its 2 years living together without a child, one with. This is referred to as common law marriage. Which is legally considered the same as a religious/voluntary marriage. In which case if she leaves she can take you to divorce court even though there never was a wedding.
