Don't confuse hunger and thirst.
Often you can drink some water and wait a minute and your body realizes it's doing just fine food wise.
Your body needs water to burn calories... drink the water so that your body can do the work necessary to process your existing food and fats.
[–]TrumpRules2016 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I was about to say this. Drinking water is good for people who are trying to eat less. Plus, it's a lot healthier than soda and other drinks.
[–]TeleportingToYerMoms3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I've noticed that drinking water affects my mood positively as well.
[–]TrumpRules2016 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Yeah and your body feels better when you are hydrated. When you are dehydrated, you usually feel terrible.
Think about the day after a night out when your head is throbbing. It's because you are dehydrated.
[–]IkWhatUDidLastSummer1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Actually, it's usually because of the salt balance and ethanal and not that you need water. Alcohol actually becomes H2o when metabolized, thats why alcoholics can do fine drinking just alcohol and not drink any water at all. What you want to do is to drink a crap ton of water BUT more importantly eat a shit ton of salt when you've been out drinking.

I'm fasting right now for religious purposes and am going from 1 A.M. to 9 P.M. daily without water. When I was cutting before I started fasting, I adjusted to the hunger mood swings pretty quickly, but dehydration is a whole nother beast.

Medical student and can confirm this. Water is essential for the Beta-oxidation of fatty acids (from fat cells) into acetyl-coA, which is the basic molecule used to generate energy. This B-oxidation process allows your body to utilize fat but can get hung up without the essential water intake.
If you're not getting acetyl-coA from B-oxidation you're going to feel low on energy. Synthesizing glucose from other intermediates to break down to acetyl-coA is a process that actually consumes energy, so the easier thing for the body to do is to eat more and just have that dietary food content broken down for energy.
Drink water so you can oxidize more fatty acids instead of overeating.

I thought that's what I said?
Kidding... excellent probably very technically accurate analysis of the importance of water.
All I know is that water is all you really "need" to function.
I think there are a lot of people trying to ride "sugar highs" all day and that's a problem to avoid.
Sometimes it's just good to slow down your system, eat less, drink enough water to get by, but don't go crazy about it.
My estimation is that you need about a gallon of water per day. (rough guess)

Haha just a little science to back up your solid point fam. As to the actual necessary amount it varies by body, but be careful cause drinking too much will dilute your electrolyte levels and give you some not-so-fun symptoms - anyone would definitely feel it when approaching that point though.
[–]NeoreactionSafe0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Eat and drink just enough to cover what your body is telling you it wants.
People are so distracted by the modern world they don't know themselves, so they eat and drink like robots without any feedback.

I'm in the middle of a 24 hour fast, so this post came in an opportune time.
A lot of people unknowingly use food as their drug of choice, including myself, to ease their frustrations and anxiety caused by a deep craving for connections & a sense of accomplishment. If someone is committed to losing weight, they should seriously consider if they're guilty of this error.
Personally, I deal with emotional eating by fasting and making sure that my energies are put to productive and fulfilling use.

Simple advice I'd give anyone looking to avoid overeating and implement good eating habits:
Healthy fats are your friend. They provide your body vital nutrients, don't spike blood sugar, and keep you full for longer. Ever see anyone still hungry after taking down an 8oz ribeye?
Eliminate all added sugars and flours. No cookies, chips, crackers, snacks, etc. These all spike your blood sugar temporarily, but will leave you hungry later.
Eat real foods, not manufactured crap. A good rule of thumb, if you can't describe how a food was produced in more than 2-3 steps, avoid it. Chicken? Killed, butchered and cooked. Easy. Brussel sprouts? Picked, washed, and cooked. Doritos? Good luck.
[–]Mail_Order_Lutefisk2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Before I drastically cut heavy carbs and sugars, I used to regularly eat 16 ounces of ribeye and would still be hungry. Now, I limit myself to 6-8 ounces and I'm good.
This one is really key. My buddy has a rule of thumb, "if it's white, it ain't right." Refined sugar and flour are white, so keep them to a minimum. Once you knock these things out, you'll have a few bad days, but after the crap leaves your body, you won't get hungry at 10 (2 hours after breakfast), 3 (2 hours after lunch) and 8 or 9 (2 hours after dinner). Knocking out those two or three snacks in a day will knock out 3-400 calories a day. Given the 3500 calories per pound math, you can see why it's relatively easy to gain 10 pounds of fat over the course of 6 months with those snacks added in. Conversely, if you snack, it's pretty easy to drop 10 pounds by getting rid of the snacks without doing anything else.

Drink more water. That helped me limit my over-eating. (also cut out all the sugary drinks)
[–]Truedemocracy2 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Cutting out bad drinks (soda, vitamin water, yes even Gatorade unless you're balls deep in a sport) is the quickest and easiest way to improve your health.
I only drink 3 things: water 90% of the time, coffee 5% (real coffee, not that manufactured smoothie starbucks shit), and alcohol the rest. Be efficient with your alcohol consumption. At home on a Wednesday watching tv and wanting to drink a bud? Cut it out. You won't get a buzz, you're by yourself, there's no point. At a social event or out with friends? By all means drink away guilt free.
Basically drink just water and only drink alcohol to get drunk is my philosophy and it works well

What got me out of eating myself fat was giving up wheat carbs, sugar, and doing IF. In around 2 months I went from 42" waist to 33" - Didn't even lift or anything, managed to retain most of my mass (only lost like .5" everywhere).
[–]diskhead12 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
IF as in intermittent fasting? What schedule did you go by?
[–]1Metalageddon2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
He probably went standard "16hr fast 8 hour feed" or warrior "20hr fast 4hr feed"
I am currently at 20/4.
[–]Redteen2241 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
How are you finding 20/4? I have been on 16/8 for two months now and I'm thinking of cutting down to the former.
[–]1Metalageddon1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I'm finding no big difference. I usually only took creatine and coffee pre workout, which takes an hour, maybe 80 minutes max. So I was already at 7, maybe 6.5/17.5, shorting dinner didn't hurt me at all. Ymmv.
You'll get much better general info and a wider base of experience heading to the intermittent fasting sub, with some bleed over to the keto sub. "Both can be instantly found via Google".
As far as my current cut, I've experienced no difference because I switched to 20/4 only a few weeks ago. I wish I had some stats to help you but alas, until 3 months in I won't. I've not had any noob gains or cuts in... Well years. (Not at all implying you're a noob, you get it.)
[–]Unver1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't understand how you guys don't get depleted during workouts. I find that if I don't eat a sizable amount of carbs before workout, my strength is much lower and the mood I have in the gym isn't the same. I wonder how bad it would be if I was working out fasted.
[–]madmike112 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's because you are a carb junkie, it takes time to switch from glucose to ketones (4 days without carbs)
[–]1Metalageddon0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's all calibration. . You could break the fast from 1300 to 1700, or maybe do as I do, I break my fast from 0700 to 1100. It should be catering to you bro.
[–]Redteen2240 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Cheers man. However, I am a total noob. I think I've got at least another 6 months of easy noob gains/fat loss.
[–]Need2LickMuff0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I started off with 16/8, and progressed to 18/6. I'd throw in a 24 hour fast after each month, and would sometimes try a 19/5 (I didn't like it , though.. seemed redundant).
[–]Pamphlet__2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Overeating is a consequence of evolution.
Those who were able to eat more than necessary when possible had better odds of survival because they were able to be prepared for periods of starvation.
That's why we separate intestinal satiety (no more hunger : what's necessary for your body) and gastric satiety (no more physical space in the stomach). Scientific paper here
Being satisfied with intestinal satiety is unnatural when food is still available, but it's a habit everyone can and should develop in our modern society. It's all about listening to our bodies and acknowledging our nature.
I see it as another opportunity to build discipline which bring positive momentum in my life.
[–]clme4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Buy a scale and use it weekly.
Beware of justifying eating an excess of "healthy foods" such as nuts or avocado, that are actually very calorie-dense. Avoid the foods that fill. Think watermelon and cucumber, not peanuts and olives.
[–]Truedemocracy2 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Those are mostly good calories (think almonds) that should fill you up BUT only if you supplement it with an active lifestyle.
Can't tell you how many people I see dieting by eating peanut butter + toast.
[–]Emstario-1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
I mean I don't know why you listed avocados and nuts as "healthy foods". There's no quotation marks about it, nuts and avocados are incredibly healthy.
[–]clme1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People use the healthiness of these foods to rationalize eating excessive amounts of them, which means too many calories. It's very easy to overdo it when you have as an excuse the healthiness of the food to binge on (guilty as charged...).
[–]MasterHaircuttt0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Peanuts actually aren't that healthy. Other buts are though!
[–]EchoEndl0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Source? Also, peanuts are a legume, so it doesn't make sense as to why you brought them up.
[–]MasterHaircuttt0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
The guy two comments above mentions peanuts.

Here's how I do it:
Have targets, but more importantly develop a system that works for YOU. Every day I tweaked my system. What works? Do that. What doesn't work ... how can I fix it? Then fix it. Read a bit. Do a bit. Improve my eating and exercise system every day or every week.
Examples for me (yours will be different)
Everything has been made as streamlined and easy as possible to minimise required willpower.
You don't have to be great looking to be good with girls, but it sure helps. I'd rather spend an hour in the gym than an hour battling with LMR.

What's your philosophy on alcohol consumption?
Eating out is something I agree should be cut back
[–]Senior EndorsedMattyAnon0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Alcohol is fine if you can handle it and include the calories from the booze as well as the meal, and not use your lowered inhibitions to drink and eat more.
If this happens, try not to. If you can't stop it, don't drink or limit drinking occasions.
Do what works... or choose between alcohol and being fit. If you'd rather drink than be fit, then do that. Just don't complain about not being fit if you make the choice to drink. And don't complain about not drinking if you choose to be fit. Choose for yourself, go with it, and enjoy life.
For myself - I drink, sure.
See my philosophy is if when I drink I make sure more drinks will follow. Try to cut out the drunk food crap - sure, but I see absolutely zero point in getting a beer with dinner or having just 1-2 drinks with friends. At that point I would rather replace it with someone else and just drink to get drunk/buzzed/have a good time.
You can absolutely be fit and drink alcohol. It just has to go from a daily thing (people do this) to the weekends or select other occasions
[–]stephcurrythrowaway1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Drink a glass of water then wait 5 minutes before you eat. You'll probably eat less regardless
[–]Boy2Mann 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That eating out of anxiousness bit really hit home for me. It's a habit i need to eradicate.
[–]SwoleyMoleyFrijoley0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm in the middle of a three day fast right now. The biggest hunger killers for me have been an EC stack and drinking only water. Drinking only water has this weird effect of making the fast easy. When I include diet pop my fasts are difficult as fuck.
[–]Futon_Rasenshuriken0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I also like to trick my mind or keep myself occupied with things that require both hands, concentration, and/or constant movement.
My fitness pal can be a great help too so you know when you've reached your limit.
[–]nebder 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good tips. The basics are MyFitnessPal, a food scale and only water and water based drinks like coffee and tea. (excluding protein supplements if that's your thing). That is the basis of a solid nutrition plan. Add on meal prep and you're off to the races.
The first day of IF was the worst getting to lunch time. Now I have the opposite problem of getting all my calories during my feeding window. I use cottage cheese to finish up my calories if needed. Good macro mix and relatively calorie dense.
[–]King_crabs0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
A little late to the party but I have a helpful tact courtesy of our Lord and Savior Tim Ferriss. Here are his five rules as a part of a slow carb diet.
1.) nothing that can be white (no grains, breads, pastas, whatever) 2.) no fruits (high in sugar) 3.) don't drink your calories. so basically just water and black coffee. Exception: 1-2 glasses of red wine a night 4.) eat the same 3 meals a day, spaced out 4-5 hours between bfast and lunch, and 6-8 hours between lunch and dinner. 5.) CHEAT DAY. One day to eat whatver and go wild. I recommend and use Saturday (as does L&S Tim)
Has helped me out a ton with this exact problem.
[–]DiggerClam0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Tim Ferris is a fraudulent piece of shit.
No fruits? One of the healthiest foods of all? Smart!
2 glasses of red wine a night to destroy your slow wave sleep? Smart!
Might as well take his fake Testosterone advise too. 3 Hazelnuts a day to QUADRUPLE your free test!
Guy's a fucking idiot.
[–]King_crabs0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No fruits because of the sugar A.K.A fast carbs
Wine is optional, but I didn't know about the sleep disruption. I'll take that into account.
Before this I thought he was a God. Any other scams he runs I should be aware of?
Thanks Digger

Somethings that helped me lose nearly 20kg is to drink a glass water before eating, it makes me archieve my sense of being full with much less food. Also using MyFitness pal has helped to notice how much calories are in my meals and I used it until I memorized what I eat.
Drinking only water with Coffee in the morning and the rest zero sugar and boom in 8 months I lost those 20Kg while adding lifting and I have a body that I;m happy with and getting compliments and looks, while I'm not even close to the goal I want to reach.
