Let me paint a picture of the average married man's birthday.

You get home from work, because you're the breadwinner you can't afford to take a day off over something silly like a birthday. When you get home you find the kids running wild, probably breaking shit, and the house is in its usual state of disarray. Your wife is on the couch, still in her sleepwear watching trash tv and generally ignoring the chaos that's going on.

No food is made, no cake in sight, and your family hardly acknowledged your entry. Because there is nothing on the dinner table, your spouse has the great idea that everyone goes out to eat so long as you're paying. Because she couldn't be bothered to make reservations anywhere in between commercial breaks, you both get in an argument about which chain restaurant the family goes to.

You wait in line, get seated, kids are now sword fighting with the silverware until you have enough and snap at them to make them behave. Your wife then scolds you for yelling at the kids. After your shitty overpriced food the wait staff bring you a free dessert and try to make a silly show of it before you tell them to fuck off. You finish your meal and pay the $100 or so bill and head home.

You and your spouse get into another argument about how you looked at the waitress a millisecond longer than allowed when orderering your food. Finally home, you sit on the couch and get a present from your wife. It's an incredibly tacky necktie to go with the 10 others she got you through the years, it'll go into the back of the closet with all the other ugly ass clothes she buys you with your money. Then your daughter gives you a card she made earlier and you tear up, not because it's well made or anything, but because it didn't cost you money. This will be going in the front of your keepsake drawer where you'll have it forever.

After the kids are off to bed, your wife hints at a potential blowjob right after she gets out of the shower. You excitedly get in bed and are watching tv while waiting for the first bj you've had all year. When your wife gets out of the shower she complains about a sudden onset of a headache and says she's just not feeling it. This is nothing new, so you say fuck it and get some sleep, after all you have work in the morning.

Happy birthday to me.

Tomorrow is my birthday, so tonight, I'm riding a fast motorcycle into the city to go out with a couple friends. Going to crash on his couch so I don't have to drive or worry.

Two years ago, on my birthday, I was driving home from completing the largest most complex project I've ever been involved with. Was super excited to go out and celebrate. On a phone call from the car my ex informs me we are in an open relationship, and she won't be home cause she has a date.

I get excited for my birthday, I'm just going to be more particular who I spend it with.

Let me describe a number of birthday's with my ex-. The last few birthdays I received IOU's as a gift that she never delivered on and was taken out for dinner that I ended up paying for. Can you imagine the outrage if the roles were reversed?

I always thought about this from a one-earner household perspective. Like anything your wife gets you, she just spent your money on you. Like tf, I can do that by myself.

My Dad was kind of a anti-social with his family for the last 3 years until he died.

His birthday was the one day of the year I went out of my way to make sure I saw him face-to-face to wish him a happy birthday and deliver a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (his favorite).
