The idea that America is free is a bit of a joke. You have highly aggressive police and courts for a start, and you imprison a higher percentage of your population than just about anywhere else. More blacks in prison than were ever slaves or so I hear. Your media and universities are controlled by a single ideology, and not subscribing to that ideology can get you fired from large companies like Google. You have some freedoms, like the freedom to bear arms, which are unusual by comparison to other countries, but that doesn't make up for all the rest. Overall I'd rate America no better than average for freedom by developed world standards.

I'm not American, and while over-the-top American patriotism has rubbed me the wrong way in the past, I've always admired the pride Americans have for their country. As a Canadian, I can't say I'm terribly patriotic; it's a good country to live in and it has treated me well, but meh, that's as good as it gets for me. I wish I could feel that chest-thumping pride Americans seem to possess. Also, it's a fucking cool flag.

Anyway, it's sad to see Americans so ho-hum about their country. This isn't the way it should be. Something is very wrong in the universe.
