There's nothing wrong with buying a feel good toy after being trapped in a toxic marriage for years, but you are correct.

The book "The Millionaire Next Door" warns about buying status symbols, but in the case of MGTOW we aren't using them to attract women.

Recognizing a car as the appliance it is rather than some status symbol that many assume it to be is a sign of wisdom, but... You don't have to drive a 20+ yr old beater, it's perfectly fine to get something comfortable and reliable. Especially if you spend many hours a week commuting or driving for whatever reason. Just don't fall for the trap of thinking that you are your car, or that somehow your car represents who you are. That's where people fuck up.

My car is in really good shape, but the only times I lend it to my brother, sister and mom, is when it got a lot of issues....... it is 15 years old and I try to keep it in good shape, too bad this idiots just said that they will help me pay for the dents, but never give money.

EDIT: I left the dents and every time they ask for a favor, I just point them at the car and the details and they got mad that I don't help them :D

I'd say within reason. Only concern I have with driving a POS is what image you are presenting at work. I remember interviewing for a job out in LA. I interviewed with a "Director." He took me to lunch and when I walked to the parking lot I was surprised to find out he drove what appeared to be a 15-20 year old Carolla. At that level you should have something a little more decent even if it's a 5-7 year old Camry or something. Dude just came off as cheap as fuck and I wouldn't want to work for him.

I only partially agree with you.
If you can afford to maintain an high profile car, by all means go ahead and enjoy it.
If you want to save as much as you can, you should focus on the most reliable and low maintenance car produced in the last 4-5 years. Do not look for older cars, or you'll get stuck with their maintenance costs that, even if low, will stack up due to their frequency in occurrence.

I have a 2003 Honda Element, it still runs well, the radio is busted so I am going to replace that, has 176,000+ miles on it and the AC needs charging, otherwise it is working great and I have seen no reason to upgrade it. I now ride a motorcycle when the weather is decent and I don't have errands I need to do with a car so I am not piling on the miles on the Element like I used to.

i would drive a 90s shitbox but they put so much salt on the roads that all the 90s cars have fallen apart. I have a 2005 saab and a 2013 scion. both stick shift so less chance a woman can borrow it

Get a sleeper car. Like a Cadillac CTS-V, but remove the V emblem. Or modify a non-sporty car to be really nice under the hood.

you can still find a fun car to drive in the summer for dirt cheap while using your 1993 Tercel for everything else. This combo can be had for under 5k and in comparison to a new new car, it will cost the same as that "premium audio package with sirius"........

Damn. Wish I still had my yellow/brown 1981 Ford Fairmont 3.3L straight 6. Rusted doors covered in duct tape, cracked eggs in the rad regularly, needed oil top ups every 3 days, 2 tires required air refills every couple days, gas needle didn’t work, stalled out in cool, damp conditions if the driver didn’t know how to combat this (throw in neutral, foot slightly on gas when stopped), really high idle (got up over 70 km/h without hitting gas on several occasions), cigarette lighter didn’t work. The trunk was packed full of maintenance items that kept the car running. On the upside, the heating worked (too well) and I outfitted it with a decent sound system.

This was a car that raped your eyes. A car you would never want to be tangled with in a crash. A car that cost a ton just to maintain on a weekly basis. It was a car that had no business going on road trips but did anyway. A car every women wanted to avoid. I called it the Valdez.

If I can find a picture of this monstrosity, I will post later.

Being somewhat advanced middle age thots with ticking clocks or looking for a baby daddy generally leave me alone... I just have to deal with the dried up older set. Which is pretty easy to do.

The thing is I don't care if you or another person respects me based on what I drive (doesn't even make sense really) and I also can afford driving a decent truck (make money with it /work tool) and a muscle car since I always wanted one. I don't care what other people think at all about it. I liked them and I bought them. Paid off and enjoy every minute of driving them :)

I drive a new Porsche and nobody tries to extract anything from me.

I also have a brokerage account and 5 homes. When I was younger, I did drive an old beater until I saved up enough to buy my first home - a 4 family slum - at 23. Now I don't have to struggle so will drive a car I love.

You can drive that old beater.

I can retire, but why? I like what I do and if I retired I would probably drink too much and die younger.
